I have a 66 Mustang with a 200 I6. Right now the tranny is not in it. Can it be safely towed without the tranny. Will it cause any motor or motor mount damage. It's only being towed a few miles.
Is the driveshaft still in the car? If it is towed with the rear wheels on the ground, I believe the drive shaft will turn. But it is not difficult to remove, especially with the tranny out. Just four nuts on the rear U-joint. Be sure and tape the U-joint caps when you get the driveshaft out to keep them from falling off. If they do, there's a chance some of the little roller bearings will fall out.
It would be a good idea to run some mechanics wire through on of the rear block to trans holes and wire it up to a strong point on the firewall. That should prevent the engine from rocking back and forth on the engine mounts.
Thanks for your replies. I do have the driveshaft out. I am going to have a tow truck tow it, hopefully a flatbed. Although, I don't know what mechanics wire is so I'll get some heavy duty wire and tie the back of the engine up.. Thanks again
Get a set of ratchet straps. They always come in handy and they are inexpensive.
