Default Good intake for 1967 Mustang with stock 289 V8 engine?

67 coup
4 bbl 289
May have been recammed but no other big modifications.

Changeing a bad carb gasket I stripped out the aluminum threads on my Edlebrock performer 289 intake manifold. Being that it was only the back two stud threads that were ruined I tried helacoils and finaly resorted to JB wield but I still have a huge air leak between the carb and manifold since it can't tighten down enough. I'm quite sure I will have to replace the manifold now.

Should I go with another Edlebrock Performer or try something beefier as I do intend to soup her up over time. I"m running a 650 cfm Edlebrock 4 barrel now but as it needs to be rebuild I'm considering going back to a Holly wich would widen my intake choices.
I'm hopeing some of you vets can provide some good insight on what a good choice for my ride would be. I'll be happy to answer any additional questions about my ride necissary.

Thanks for any advice.

I don't understand as Edelbrock and Holley's are both square bore carbs. Unless you are talking about a spread bore type Holley. The choice in carbs is up to you. What about tapping the rear holes to accept larger studs, and drilling the carb to fit these? You can rejet the Edelbrock as they don't run very well out of the box. Make sure the manifold and carb base are both flat with a straight edge and not warped. The choices in manifolds depends on what RPM band you what to build torque in, is it an automatic or manual, does it have power brakes, what size cam, etc. I would recommend getting a Summit or Jegs catalog as they have descriptions of manifolds in them.

Default I would try to fix the manifold first........

I would try to drill and tap the manifold first - I would think the Edelbrock would be a good all-around manifold for your setup. You can't really put something on to match what you are going to build "later". If you really messed it up - you can pick up an Edelbrock Performer pretty cheap - you might watch eBay and see if there are any deals out there.

I am not sure what Richard meant when he said the Edelbrock carbs don't run well out of the box - I have put on a 1405 and two 1406 models and all ran great right out of the box.

My Holley on the other hand......................

If the cam's been swapped already, you might like the Performer RPM intake. It's not an extreme manifold, but works better than the standard Performer at higher rpm's when you're running a little bit more agressive camshafts. I've never tried the Edlebrock carbs, but have never had problems with my 600cfm Holly with vacuum secondaries and manual choke, other than a leaky O-ring on the fuel transfer tube between the bowls. I find a lot of people that complain about the Holly's, are usually trying to run them as they came in the box. Most of the time they do need to be tuned for the specific engine set up to run right.
