Question about a 1969 Mustang Coupe engine upgrade
I want to upgrade my engine to a 351w from my current 302. My question is...would it be worthwhile to switch from a carb. to a fuel injected motor? Have any of you done this and is it worth the time and effort? I was checking out a Ford Crate Engine site and they advise against it. Just wanted to see all your thoughts. Thank you.

Man, that makes no sense, I wonder why they said that? If you want EFI, go for it, there's no real reason why not to do it if that's what you want and can afford it.

This is definitely a common question. It is possible to convert over from Fuel Injection but we recommend staying with what you originally have. Reason being, there is a big financial and time investment to do the conversion. Also if do not have the technical knowledge to do this it could become a nightmare. Some of the things required to do the switch would include purchasing : a Computer, Wiring Harness, Sensors, Intake Plenums, Throttle Body, Injectors, Fuel Rail etc. The fuel pressure rates are different also which may require you to swap out your fuel tank. The new carburetors today are very reliable and tuned very easily. We do this all for you when you buy a turnkey engine package from the Engine Factory
Here, check it out. Their (Ford's) answer is not exactly what I would expect, maybe they said no because they didn't have a setup to sell you...FI's been around for so long it's a common swap now, if you want an FI setup no reason not to have one...in most cases a FI setup will out perform a carb all other things being equal...
I personally am going to go EFI. I am researching options at this time.

To me efi is worth the work id use the efi off a late 80s early 90s f150 with a 351w the efi looks the same as the fox body.
You can't use the intake, its way too tall and its a shame because the lower looks like it could flow some serious air. Trickflow makes a stock type 351W EFI intake for use in cars.

I like the Trick flow one too, but you have to use the PCM and parts off the truck to make it work in the car don't you?

I didn't know I could use the 5.0 PCM. The problem is finding one, as we were looking for the whole car for a donar and in North East Wisconsin, the ones you seem to fine are a bit pricey to use for parts.

We have the same problem here. I couldn't find a 5.0HO that wasn't attached to a beat to death $2000 foxbody, so I bought a 5.0 out of an LTD to build up, only ran me $75 and has 87k miles on it. Apparently the Mustang name jacks the price up something crazy here in chevy land.
That said I suppose you could buy a reman PCM from autozone or check one of the 5.0 boards like stangnet for a used one.
Then there's always Megasquirt...
