Question Warm 289 2V = hard starting

Hi All,

My stock 65 289 2V w/ AT is hard to start when it is warmed up, and I have, for example, just run itno the store for 5 or 10 minutes. Temp. gage read middle of range when I stop the engine.

It starts real fast when cold (after a couple pumps of the accelerator pedal to set the choke), after overnight not running. It also starts fast if the engine is warm, but has not run for 45 minutes, or so.

Any ideas on this? It seems to be getting worse as time goes on.

Thanks,
Greg

I am willing to bet that it is the starter, GET YOURS REBUILT!!!! there are multiple starters for the '67, and one for a 3 speed will not work on an auto or a 4 speed......

When you say "It starts real fast", does this mean that it sounds like the starter is doing it's job cranking the engine at the same speed when it is either cold or hot? Or is the starter cranking the same, but it is hard to start?

If it is the latter, how are the plugs and the plug wires? Points and condensor? Does it seem to run a little rough? Is the choke fully open when it is "warmed up"? Is the carb in good shape? Does the car lag from a dead start?

Then on the other hand, if it is the first thing I mentioned, (starter cranking slower when it is wamed up) it could be the starter, battery or starter relay.

I had a smiliar problem on mine, turned out to be vapor lock. An electric fuel pump mounted near the gas tank to make sure liquid gas is getting to the mechanical fuel pump on the engine will help, if it turns out vapor lock is your problem too.

I have a similar problem and found when hot to open the throttle a fair bit when cranking her over seem to fix it.

Vapor lock is what I'm thinking. If the carb is mounted right to the intake manifold, without the spacer, it could boil the fuel right out of the carb and vapor lock on ya.

I had a Courier mini truck with a 289 in her that did that. Put the spacer on and it stopped

Or

Like ZoNiE said. If it cranks slow after it is warm, it could be the starter

Talking Warm 289 2V = hard starting

Hi All,

Thanks for your feedback.
Here is some additional information about my car, that I did not put in the first e-mail:

Another non-stock item is that I have replaced points and condensor with the Ignitor by Pertronix. (I had a 77 MGB with this, and it seemed very reliable.) After I first installed the Ignitor, it fired right up - so I just can't think of what has changed since then!

Additional detail about starting the car within 5 or 10 minutes after shutting her down:

- The engine cranks over real good and fast, it just doesn't fire up. So, I think my battery and starting circuits are okay.

-In order to get the car started under these worse-case conditions, I too have to press the gas pedal nearly all the way, if not fully. It acts like it's starved of fuel.

I'm not sure about the spacer under the carb., but I'm pretty sure it is stock setup.

Thanks,
Greg

Came across your thread and I am having the same issue with my 66 289 with an Edelbroack 600. I have to pump the gas to get a start when its already nice and warm. Did you ever resolve your problem?
