I am restoring the original gauges of a mustang 66. Everything is pretty easy to restore except for the gauges mask. I have clean hem with grease remover to avoid the paint to come off but they are kind of rusty and it didn´t come off. Have anybody used any product which removes the rust but conserves the paint? They are really delicate and I am afraid that paint could come off. The one of the fuel level is already in not such good shape.
Go to your local Ace or True Value and buy a small container of phosphoric acid. Soak the part in that for a very short amount of time, until bubbles appear. Then use a blue scotch brite pad (like for non-stick cookware) and give the part good scrub. Then rinse in clear water.
Plated aluminum cleans up well after soaking for about ten seconds. Plated steel will take longer.
If you can't find phosphoric use Coke. It's the same ingredient, just more dilute.
You sound foreign and my not have access to all the things we do. Can you fill in your profile so we know where you are and the basic info on your car?
If the rust has invaded the paint there is little you can do to save the paint. Just make it as minimum an area as you can and then see what you have left.
I keep the plastic cups from individual servings of apple sauce so I can spray paint into it and then use an artist's brush to repaint things. Sometimes that is the best you can do on a budget.
I just finished the heater control panel for the new 1968. Here is the before and after.
I leave in USA but I am from Spain. Bought my mustang couple of months ago and I am under restoration right now. I like original parts; I have painted gas cap, hub caps, glove box door; everything original and now I am with the gauges and the valve covers. Few to do with the gauges, I may need to just buy them new, rust is stacked.
Thank you for your help.
