just got my 66 couple and the hazard lights won't work. the switch seems to be ok, so, is there a relay that I should check? I've searched around but can't find any info.
There are actually two flashers, one for hazards and one for turn signals. I assume that you've checked the lamps, or are they LEDs now?
Best to get a Ford Service Manual, a decent multimeter, and start checking continuity. Note that poor grounds are a notorious problem in these classic Mustangs.
There are no relays, you do have 2 flashers, one for turn signals and one for emergency lights, if the turn signals work, then switch the flashers and see if they still work. The flashers should be a 552 type if you have the HD flasher which is taller replace it as it is made for extra lights, like trailer lights. Also your hazard lights gets power from the cigarette lighter fuse, so if you don't have power to the cig lighter, you need to fix that first. Post your results. Good Luck.
Veronica's blog is for the old style switch that is hard wired to the harness. In '66 they changed that to a connector at the switch. Which do you have?
Either way it is a simple thing once you know the trick. The power comes in thru the flasher to one terminal on the switch. When the switch is moved to on, that one power wire now puts power to all 3 other terminals at once. These other 3 wires are connected to the wires that go out to the exterior lights.
The 4 way flasher should be in a clip under the dash to the right of the ash tray. It does fall out of the clip sometimes tho....should be there somewhere.
