Default 1966 Mustang rear inner fender replacement

Hello all,

I did a search on here and didn't find what I was really looking for. A friend of mine just found out he will need to have both rear inner fenders replaced on his 66 coupe. He will be pulling everything out of and off of the car to get the work done. The shop owner quoted him $40 an hour to fix it. The owner didn't want to quote a total price until he could totally see what the repair would entail. I have not had this done to my car so I didn't know what to tell him. He was wondering about how long it would take to do a job like this if just the inner fenders are to be replaced?

Thanks

If you are talking about the outer wheel wells (inner fender as you say) that could be done in a day. But I do things myself. Actually it depends on how busy the shop is you are taking it to and what kind of priority they place on it, and if they have to order the part or not.

Normally, if all the sheet metal is cut and out of the way and they just have to fit the part and weld it up, I would say a 24 hour turnaround. But there are people on this forum who have more experience with shops than I do, since I do my own stuff(less expensive!) They would probably know more.

Thanks for the reply Fastbck65, but I guess I should have made myself more clear. Actually my friend is not needing the wheel wells replaced. He is needing the rear inner fenders near the firewall replaced. The panels that the hood hinges bolt to. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks

Ah! Those are the rear inner fender "aprons" There are lots of spot welds to drill to get these removed properly. Be prepared for the shop to charge him the $40/hr rate and the cost of quite a few drill bits. I'd say 2-3 day turn around time if the car is prepared for the work like you say.

Default This may be hard to tell............

I don't think you would know exactly what it is going to take to do this until you get everything out of the way and see how bad the aprons are.
I would be surprised if the shock towers may not also need some work. I would guess that the cowl and firewall/foorpans wouldn't be in great shape either.

Thanks for the info guys I will let him know.

Cobra6, this car has some different issue with it then normal. Basically it has had the front clip replaced after being hit at some point in its life. The shock towers forward all look fine. However, when they installed the clip they butchered both rear fender aprons, that is why he needs them replaced. The previous owner had one of his local shops replace the floors already. He said it was the worse of the two issues and he couldn't afford to get it all done at once. My buddy is buying the new metal from Dallas Mustang and the shop will be doing the r/r on it.

Thanks again guys, I am sure he will appreciate the info
