Default 1964 1/2 Mustang Suspension Upgrade Suggestions

Greetings;

I have been away from the Classic 'Stangs for a while and was looking for some recomendations.

I have just received a 64 1/2 V-8 coupe. It has been in storage for several years and belonged to a very good friend of mine who purchased it back in the mid 70s. Since that time the car has been stored inside. But the car has not been pampered. It was hill climbed in the early 70's before making the transistion to the drag strip.

This year's project is to replace the floors and firewall along with some other minor rust areas and then the suspension. My goals for the car are simple, a daily driver that will deliver the 3 "g"s . That is 1G acceleration, braking and cornering.

Back in the day to get these numbers would have meant a really rough race car like ride. But suspension technology has come a long way. So the question is simple. Where to begin?

Do I upgrade the current suspension? Mustang II front end? Air ride? Coil-over front and rear?

Building a car is just like building a house. You have to have a good foundation, and the wrong foundation will mean nothing but trouble and change down the road. Not to mention that I only want to spend the money to do this one time and not have to rip parts out to get to my goal. Once I get the proper suspension under the car, the braking will fall into place.

I also plan on installing subframe connectors along with a 4- or 6- point roll bar.

I would also prefer to go with a single vendor for the parts. There is nothing like a system that works together instead of fighting each other.

But, at the end of the day I am open to any and all suggestions. This will not be a restoration to showroom. This car has been raced and while it might not get raced as much in the future ( I am thinking maybe some road course [open track days] and autocross type events) this will be a car that will be driven. Not tucked away in a garage.

THX in advance!!

Jim

I was going to give an opinion hear, But JOHN RT pretty much covered it. Seeeeeep maybe a 351 W. An easy way to do this is Ford Racing parts bin. You pick the HP and you get a warranty.

THX for the info!!

I have not decided just how to handle the suspension. But coil over in the back with a torque arm looks VERY enticing. As far as the front, convert to strut and coil over maybe? The mustangII does allow me to lose the shock towers, but with a healthy SB, not worries about space. so maybe the shock towers stay...
