Default engine i.d.

I am going to look at a 302 engine tomorrow, ihear that there are roller engines and regular engines. How do i tell if it is a roller engine by looking at it , it is all apart and i do not want to buy a regular engine instead of a roller. Is there a difference in the blocks or are both the same just different cams.

the easiest way is the casting number, if it starts with an E5, it is a roller

The roller blocks have XXX cast under the intake.... if the intake is off.

"If the intake is off", you will see two threaded holes in the lifter galley also.

Roller blocks can also have "YYY" in the middle.

The casting code will read E5AE,E5TE,E6AE,E7TE or E7AE.

The all-time easiest way, like he said, is to look at the two threaded bosses in the lifter valley. If the intake is on;is it a SEFI intake? If so,then look at the casting codes. If they are like I wrote above, then yes it's a roller block-not necessarily a roller engine,or an HO,but it's a proper block anyway. If you see an older code like EOAE,D5AE,etc.then it can't be a factory roller.
