i have a 2004 ford mustang and i am buying 3.73 gears and the mechanic at the performance shop said its not always the person who puts them in he said that some type of gears just whine and i need to know what doesnt whine he suggested the ford highest grade ome style gears should i pay the extra dough
when installed properly gears should not whine, different manufacturers are louder then then others, but not in a sense that you can hear it, mostly it has to do with pinion depth another words not meshing correctly with the ring gear, or the ring gear housing is incorrectly installed, overall properly intstalled gear set will not whine, if your gears are already intsalled i would have a professional reset the rearend to factory specs.
The Ford Racing gears are EXACTLY the same as the OEM, just less expensive. Don't ask me to explain why.
The FRPP gears are the best going, easiest to install and most forgiving. Next I would do Motive Gear.
I would be a little cautious of an installer making excuses before he started the work?
BREAK IN IS KEY!!! Go easy for 500 miles. No steady speed. First two times driving, go a short distance and allow to cool completely.
I've done a couple hundred gear sets in my life, and yes, some do whine no matter what...usually if they are cheap or not broke in correctly. Anything over a 4.10 may whine also. Like a 4.55 or 4.88. But those are usually a race gear set anyhow.

Im not sure why, but it is true.
Iv also installed a few hundred sets, and Iv had good luck with yukon gears, from Randys Ring and Pinion. Also the last 4 or 5 sets of Richmond Gears have SUCKED BAD, they have been ground WRONG and 2 of the sets were unusable!
Whats nice about the gears from Randys, is they tell you in there catalog if they are "noisy" or "Quite", but I never did like the idea of where there made.....but again, there good gears.
For what its worth....FOrd gears are actually "US Gears"
road and track review of the 2008 super snake(dec 2007) mentions the steady gear whine of the 3.73's resulting in 80-dBA at 70mph making conversation in cabin nearly impossible.
