The HiPo cam was .477" lift, with a long duration. 306º I think?
But if you look at, for the day it may have been something, but now, it's no biggie. Cast iron exhaust and intake, Autolite carb (600cfm vac secondary), points, etc.
What you brother hit was the right combination is all. Those are great engines, the best 5.0L Ford built to date...and they put them in SUVs
As long as you are running that gear, you won't beat anybody. Unless it's from 80-120mph
Get the 3.50 gears, a stall converter and change your valve springs. Make sure the ignition timing is correct and proper curve. Then you should beat him no problem. I wouldn't go diving into changing cams until your current set up doesn't work. Seems to be good for your set up.
