Default stalled converter not matching up

I just purchased a 2500-2800 stall converter and it is supposed to fit a 1979 C-4 step case transmission. It has a 10.5" bolt pattern and the center input shaft is too large to fit into the converter. Is this the wrong converter or did ford do a funny tranny swap for this year? The speed shop where I bought it refuses to take it back because it was a special order.
Is there a different center shaft that would make it work?

It's more than likely that you don't have the splines lined into the converter. You have to gently rotate the converter as you are pushing it further onto the shaft. You will here it bottom out when fully seated. I'm hoping you filled your converter before putting on??

found the problem...I have a 26 spline shaft and the converter is a 24. The book says I am supposed to have a 24 in it, but it is a 26 which isnt supposed to be in the step case but who wrote the dang book anyway? It is also supposed to have the 10.5 bolt pattern, not the 11.5 when you read farther.....this 79 is a pain...

Who said building a car was easy, everything just bolts together, and the books are always correct?!?!

Default step tranny c-4

In the box of the new converter.....The paperwork says do not use a 11.5" converter in a step case c-4. It came stock with a 11.5" converter...... I am starting to think 79 is one of those years that they said we have some extra parts so lets just use them up?
I am just going to put a 26 spline 11.5 back in it with a 2800 stall and run it......who reads paperwork anyway? LOL
I found that replacing the input shaft and flywheel was more than the converter....besides, I want to try out my new motor!
