I've built a moderately priced combo that put me in the low 12 possibly high 11 sec range n/a, and with the right size tire, which I have coming, I should hits very low 11's or high tens with a 150 shot and I drove it 20kms (12 miles for you south of the border) to work this morning. There is nothing extreme about the combo I have, mostly off the shelf parts. I'm using a stock shortblock with 86 flycut pistons, rod bolts and a main girdle. X303 camshaft, Dart Sr's ported by me(first try), Holley Systemax Intake, 30LB inj, 75mm Bullet, 70mm TB and 1 3/4 Mac Longtubes. I have SSM upper and lower control arms, Eibach drag launch kit, 4.10's with axles and an Auburn, T5 and a 150 NOS wet kit. I've only ran it 2 full days at the track so far and it has gone a best of 12.1 at 112mph n/a and 11.39 at 114 on NOS, unfortunately on the rev limiter at 1100ft.
Best N/A ET 12.1@112mph
Best NOS ET 11.39
Best NOS MPH 119.86mph

NO TURBOS, NO CHARGERS and on a Jennie Craig $$$diet. I was amazed. There was another guy there with 11's that night but he had spent a little more.
After talking with these guys all night and watching them run, they have some different philosophies than some of those that I've seen on AFM.
I bid on some AFR heads on EBay from this guy (John) but did not win the bidding. Going fast is the right combination of parts and tuning combined with good, practiced driving skills.

well spending alot of money doesnt always make big power.
i have an 89 lx notch,with a 40 over,shortblock,2000 trickflow cam,
rousch 200 heads,1.6 rockers,systemmax intake,70 mm holley throttle body,75mm pro-m mass air meter,#24 pound injectors,march underdrive pulleys,short belt with no power steering pump,no a/c or smog pump,kirban fuel regulator,griffin aluminum radiator, mac longtubes,dr.gass x-pipe,3-chamber flows, worldclass t/5 trans,3.73 gears.
88gt best time to date is 11.68@118.7 with a bad 60' time of 1.734. The following week I went back and was averaging 1.58 60' but had transmission problems and kept missing second gear. This was acomplished with 91 octane Amoco ultimate.
current combo:
-306 DSS low compression short block
-TFS twisted wedge(ported and polished by RAP)Ron Anderson Performance, no longer in bussiness
-1.6 omega gear roller rockers
-cobra intake(ported and polished by RAP)
-custom ground cam from RAP(not sure on specs)
-75mm throttle body
-255lb/hr in tank pump and a T-rex
-38lb lucas injectors(no fmu)
-S-trim vortec, 14-15lbs at 6500RPM
-power pipe
-PMS from anderson ford motorsport
-crane HI-6 ignition
-C&L 73mm mass air
-mac 1 5/8 equal length shorties
-mac 2.5 power chamber H-pipe
-mac 2.5 cat back with mac flowpath mufflers
-tremec 3550
-8.8 with auburn pro diff. and moser 31 spline axles and moser 9" housing ends with big bearings
-3:73 gears
I have run this combo for over three years now and have never blown a head gasket yet(knock on wood) but future plans are to put a complete aeromotive fuel system in with 42lb or bigger injector. Reason being i do run lean over 6000RPM and I am pulling a lot of timing out of it up top to keep it together.
Also future plans are to put a tubular K-member and A-arms with coil overs, manual rack and a cage in(my track doesn't require one until 11.50 or quicker)
**New times for me**
14.1 @ 101.8 mph w/ a 60ft of 2.09 sec....yeah i should be quicker, but thats pretty good considering 75-80 is horrible w/ their track (bumps, little holes at the starting line)
