Default First time drag race...tips?

Hello all. Racing my 66 coupe at Atlanta Motor Speedway 'Friday Night Drags' tonight. I have a stock 93 EFI 5.0 in it, stock AOD, 3.00 rear end. Anyone have any suggestions? All I can think of is to launch at a certain RPM, and lower my rear tire pressure. Anyone know a good launch RPM? Thanks in advance.

Back in the early 80's, that was my home track then in 84 I ended up here. But having a stock 5.0 and AOD along with a high geared rear end with 3.00. You say it's your first time, after your burn-out and I hope your running a drag radial, pull up to stage put the top light on your pre-stage light. Don't get nervous and don't worry about the guy in the other lane, after your both pre-staged roll up easy to stage. You'll want to roll in shallow being your first time, that's when you roll up to stage to turn on the second light. Roll up and just get the bottom stage light to flicker until it comes on then stop. This will hurt your reaction time, but better your ET at the end it gives you just a little more of a head start before you roll through the second beam and start the clock. Having a stock AOD and 5.0, pay attention to the amber lights as they come down the tree, when you see the last amber light come on then nail it. Your time will probably be in, either the high 14's to mid 15's seeing that you have a stock drivetrain. The 66 Coupe is a nice car, good luck with it and take care of her. After you go tonight, post your times let us know how you did, Mike. SCT Tuner.

The launch RPM is going to depend on a bunch of things... How much power you're making, what tires you're using, track conditions, etc.

I haven't been drag racing very long, so the only real advice I can give is to not worry about your reaction time off the line right now. The clock starts when you decide to leave the line. Play around with different launch RPMs and shift points and find where your sweet spots are.
Since it's your first time out, don't be dissapointed in slow times right now. You just need to experiment right now...

The most important thing is to have a good time.

Best advice other than what was given is to let your car cool down for about 45 minutes. While it is cooling go and watch the other cars , watch how they roll up and around the water. Listen and watch and learn. You will have a newly found sense of what is going on, and what you will need to do. Most of all have fun and be safe.
