Default Density Altitude is real killer, and frustrating

Damn air is just killing my et`s,and everyone else's here in Albuquerque. I did not realize how much it can effect your times. Even the big dragsters that where running 7`s were running 8`s. I know I am improving , because my ET`S did come down from last time.It is saying a lot to me doing this in much higher DA`S. Frustrating YES, I really wanted the 11, 12:001 is just to damn close. I did pull my best 60` of 1.6. I could never get better than 1.7. I know the car has more in it also. Maybe next week.

Yes, if your DA is 5000 ASL your engine is only producing about 75% of its SL HP. Fact of life for Air Breathers. Forced Induction is really the only option you have. On the plus side of the DA issue, for a given speed, the drag from air is reduced allowing higher top speeds and better cruising fuel economies.

Are you sure about that? I had a slight drop in my trap speed.

The speed at which the car hits its aerodynamic limits.

In aircraft that effect shows up in true airspeed vs indicated air speeds. At sea level in a standard day, they are the same. Now lets say you are at 5,000 ASL and its a nice 80 Degree day. Your DA is a bit over 7,000 ft. And at 100 MPH the wind resistance on your car will be the same as if you were traveling 89.5 MPH. Or you could be driving on the highway at 75 and be getting the same MPG as if you were going 67. That is the upside I am referring to. Provided your car has EFI. Carburetor engines just run rich.

Although I have never seen one for a Car Engine, I have seen power tables for aircraft engines. They are found in the Pilots Operating Handbook and will advise of what to expect for power and fuel consumption for given DA and engine control settings. That is where I got the 75% at 5000 feet approximation for my earlier post.

Your trap times are just reflecting the effect of lower horse power over a given distance.

I hear being high up in elevation also adds octane , this did not sound right either. Yes arodynamics could play a role in top speed. Thanks for the info.

Higher DA for a n/a aspirated engine has the effect of packing less a/f mix into the cylinders. Since there is less mass to compress there is less heating. Less heating will allow lower octane fuel to be used.

(How Octane Works to Improve Gas Mileage)

"Modern engine management systems can accommodate this adjustment, and in some recent studies, the octane number requirement was reduced by 0.2-0.5 (R =M)/2 per 300m increase in altitude."

So it is true, and that is why they have 86 octane here. Thank you for the good information there.

Yes you did, and it got worse. Still I pulled off a better 60 ` and new pb. I can not wait for some better air. I just really wanted to get it into the 11`s. Oh WELL.
