Default collector length....?

I was told that uncapped headers don't perform as well as ones with a 3" collector around 2' long??????
Any way to figure the approximate length or if it is the appropriate setup without a dyno?
Thanks again.

when you put the collectors on, spray a light colored stripe the length of the collector. after several passes you will see where the paint stops getting burnt off. cut them there. probably somewhere around 12-18". good question!

Most dyno test on the subject have shown that you will make more power with a collector extension of around 18". You need something to help maintain exhaust velocity to help pull the gases out of the header.

Thanks, I seen an article on Ed's header site. He showed different collectors that showed the discoloration after running them. I am guessing that a 3" shorty racing muffler would do the same thing. I was looking at a set that are 18" overall length and have a 3" straight through design. I heard a set at the track and they made a nice deep tone and eliminated the ear piercing noise when at high rpm. They seem to be a reasonably priced and might even pass on the street with a short length of 3" pipe and a turn down....
