Talking Thinking about getting into drag racing...

I have been reading up on drag racing a bit and would like to get into it. Is there anyone who I could ask a lot and sometimes obvious-seeming questions?

Ask away, no question is too obvious if you don't know the answer! There's a lot of people here who love to talk about drag racing. OK, OK, so I'm one of them, but there are others.

Most tracks have a street legal or a test and tune day. You will need a Snell approved helmet that covers your ears; they may rent them at the track.

Tell them this is your first time and the track people will be more then happy to help you. If it weren't for new blood the sport would die.

I read through the basics. Just have some small questions, possibly leading to a series of more questions.

Ok, I only know of 2 drag strips in the area, a ways away. Harvey, ND (173mi) and Bismarck, ND (236mi) seems to be it... I think the Harvey one is their airport and I don't know any time the will be having events or anything. Any advice? I know I need a helmet, is there any other needed items? And I know there are different classes, I have a 1978 Mustang Cobra with 4bbl carb and possible cams, do you know what class it would be in? Also, are there age limits?

That is a long drive. Call the track and see if they have a street legal night; just heads up racing no brackets. If you are not 18 you will need guardian permission to race.

A bracket racer here. It may be hard to answer a question because so much is build on so much more. Bracket racing seems easy but once you start asking questions a lot of other thing need to be addressed. Almost everything in drag racing is inter dependent. Everythng effects everything else. Glad that makes thing clear as mud. lol.

On a grass roots level at most NHRA tracks you have a Summit ET series. The race is open to anyone and has several classes. Your car fits well into street, sportsman, or trophy. Each track calls it something different . You want the "entry" level class. The class usually has a slow and fast ET break. Anything is legal running 19.99 to 11.50. The faster you go the more safety requirements you need. Again you need to check the track for the exact class requirements. At my home track Street is 19.99 to 11.50. need dot tires, factory glass, fenders and a hood.

If you have questing post here or shoot me an im or email.

The two tracks you mentioned may be the closest in ND, but the dragstrip locator says there's a track just across the state line in MN. According to Mapquest it's only a couple miles from Fargo ND!

INTERSTATE DRAGWAYS 2009

It's an NHRA 1/4 mile track. From the website it looks like Trophy is the entry level class. $40 to enter, limited to 11.50 and slower, no gizmos or transbrakes allowed, slicks or street tires are OK. Short of a test and tune session this looks like the best bet for a beginner.

Read up and ask questions, but the only way to really get into it is to go and run. As long as you don't have an atitude you will find almost all racers will go out of their way to help a new guy.

Now for the standard warning. Drag racing can be very addicting. Some people get severly hooked on their first trip. Signs of a drag racing addiction are an always empty wallet and a constant big smile on the face. Don't say I didn't warn you.
