Default DRAG racing a rag top

guess the question come down to what are other feelings about using a rag top to drag race. Vs 1987 LX hatch back i already have.

or should i save the body and just use the 5.0 out of it with the automatic trans.

rag top body is very nice only proeblems appear to be dead paint and need the top replaced motor appears to i have had the TB replaces with a larger unit fuel rails are not ford stock and injectors do not appear stock, seems to have more power at lower end then stock.

biggest issue is the ET limit on a vert... 13.49 or you need a 5 point roll bar....

What kind of drag car? Street/strip car or dedicated drag car? Bracket racer or heads up?

The main disadvantages I can think of with a 'vert is the weight and the fact that it will need a roll bar at a slower speed, 13.49 instead of 11.49 in the IHRA.

If it's a bracket car and slower than the 13.49 so it won't need the roll bar and if it's easier to use the 'vert I'd say go for it. But knowing how racing goes you'll end up making it faster eventually so you might want to take that into consideration.

When it comes to Mustang body styles for drag racing notchbacks are preferred, but most guys race hatches because there just aren't that many notches. Rag tops are at the bottom of the pecking order.

thank you for the information, that was sort of how i was feeling too
and the rag top is worth more as a street car

drag racing is full drags from 12 point cage tubs and the list goes on, the bed roon is starting to get full of stuff for the project

and the 5.0 should in the long run go faster then the 2.? out of my sand drag rail

guess i am going back thought my second child hood other then the fact i never grew up

62 and counting

to echo what has been said.....

notchbacks are the preferred platform to build a drag car.....

Mainly because of the weigh difference......

But a hatch when put on a proper diet can and will perform as well if not better.....

because of the hatch & rear window you have litte more weight over the rear wheels......

which results in better traction......

i knew someone that put a fiberglass hatch & lexan window in their car and actually went slower......

now verts are a whole different story......

they are heavy & flex like a 18 year old yoga instructor....

not real conducive to going fast.......

When I think about a conv. racing, here's who come to mind:

Racin Jason: 347 twin turbo Kenny Duttwhiler motor. Sometimes it looks like the roof is about to blow off.
If you listen in the video you can hear the tire shake all the way down the track

I think of racing a convertible, I think of Stormin Norman first.

i race my vert all the time, and the weight sux

ive removed a bunch of crap from the interior,(convertible back seat only weighs 22lbs,top and bottom)have draglites with skinny's up front, and the pig still weighs over 3400 lbs with me in it,im 175lbs

most hardtop mustangs come in around 3300 w/ driver, and can easily be lightened up to 3000lbs or so with some basic weight removal

given the choice,i'd def race the hardtop if i were you

i've thought many times about getting myself a 4banger notch/hatch to race and to put all my parts on from the vert, but just dont have the time and $ right now,so im stuck with the vert, cuz its all i've got lol

IMO if you making race car go with the nothcback. Lighter, stronger, and a bit safer.
