Pull # 1 plug and crank engine "gently" with starter (coil unpluged so it wont try to start) while holding finger in sparkplug hole, the compression will pop it out when it nears TDC.

When you feel air trying to come out of the hole then the piston is on the up stroke, and when your finger is being sucked into the hole the piston is on the down stroke.

Mark both events on the damper (up and down stroke), the spot in the middle of both is TDC

The 'center' is actually right between that dead spot you describe.

Use the finger on the spark plug hole as described. That way you know #1 is on the compression stroke. Then manually turn the motor until the 0 on the crankshaft damper is in line with the timing pointer.

That is TDC on #1.

borrow a dial indicator if you don't have one. it's much more accurate than using your finger.
