Default 2002 GT with auto at the track today

I just recently purchased a 2002 Mustang GT w/automatic. Today was a nice day to take it to the track and try her out. Temperatures were in the mid 50’s. My car hasn’t had anything done to it yet in the way of engine mods or anything. I even ran 35psi in the rear tires.

All runs were run in Drive with traction control off. I tried to hold the engine at 2000 and punch it at launch. This seemed a little tricky because the tires want to break loose and go into a power brake burnout.

1st run RT- .373

60’- 2.25

1/8 - 9.540 seconds @77.02 MPH

2nd run RT- .328

60’- 2.120

1/8 – 9.429 seconds @76.61 MPH

3rd run RT- .372

60’ – 2.089

1/8 – 9.322 seconds @77.33 MPH

1/8 – 9.32 converts to ¼ in 14.6

There were 4-5 mustangs at the track today, 1 was a Mach 1 a couple 2003’s and a 96’ 5.0 and seeing these other cars run, I am happy with my cars performance. The other cars present were all manuals, and some were faster some were slower than my auto. The ones that were faster beat me by 1 tenth running 9.2

After running today I feel the car needs a couple obvious additions to get it out of the hole quicker. A higher stall-speed converter to be able to break the car at the line to maybe 2500, and gears.

One question I have for you guys, is there gears available to change in the transmission? Maybe a 1st, 2nd gear swap in the transmission would be ideal.

I’m afraid that going down the highway in O/D at say 70 MPH I’m turning 2100 RPM currently. If I put a 2500 Stall-speed converter in, I don’t want it to be slipping while highway driving.

Please comment on performance for my stock GT.

Drop your rear Tire psi to about 18-20, that will help with the spinning a little, or get some drag radails

35 is definitely too high. try 28 or 30. Get some gears and adjustable shocks that you can set up for better weight transfer when you go to the strip. Don't mess with the converter until you do more engine mods.

Don't bother with tranny gears, or the stall kit. All id reccommend is going with 3.73 gears good for street and strip, and less than $100 if you shop around, and droppin the tire pressure, or slicks if you've got money to blow. Also I am glad to hear other automatic stang drivers are out there below the age of 80

Yeah ..but the only problem with dragracing with an automatic transmission.....Granny can push the pedals....It takes a man to shift..

Ya, but i would rather have my nice new Auto then do a conversion, that just looks like a NIGHTMERE to me!!! Also, everyone thinks my car is slower because i have an auto, let me tell you, i've had people sware up and down i had a manuel then when they see i don't start thinking it was another car. and i say, "Ya, another Calipso green 5.0 with a 3inch White cowl hood must be driving around!" The 1st to 2nd is better then my cosins lod 95 GT. chears it like nothin! But stock, it REALLY sucked, i WILL admit that.
