Default Motor tunning question

Ive been reading up on motors for quite some time in prep for building myself i nice motor for my 66. My goal for the 66 has been consistent mid 10's on drag radials and mid 11's on street tires. Of course there are so many variables in a car setup you cant fully predict what you will get in the end. I do want my motor to be as reliable as possible but i see alot of these guys in the magazines putting huge lifts on their cams. Like .700 or more inches of lift. Now lets say you build a really critical motor. Has tones of lift, compression through the roof and all the goodies a true drag racer could want. At that point would detunning your motor through your ecu/{injectors/carb}/and timing retardation really make your motor any more reliable considering you still have such radical parts already in place (like your cam). This is just a question because i want to overbuilt my motor. I want to build it to perform really well with some good quality parts, and then i want to tune it to a safer level so my motor is down every week

with a 700 lift cam , you'll be using up alot of valve springs . Also , you probably wont get it to idle very well for a daily driven car . Also , you have enough vaccuum to run power brakes .
