What would you want to do a burnout for anyway?
(Impress the ladies?)
A Burnout will do you nothing but harm unless you are running Drag Tires.
It will actually make a street radial slicker and you will lose traction.
And yes it is hard on your drivetrain.
As well as your rear brakes (Thats why they make Line Locks).
So back to my question... Why?
it helps heat up the tires which makes them stickier and lets them catch onto the pavement easier
If you are running street radials you are just making them slick.
Drag Radials are formulated to become sticky when heated.
The best thing you can do with street radials is to not do the burnout, and avoid the burnout pit all together (Drive around it as to not get your tires wet).
Hehe, I went to the track fand for the 1st time ever took some runs.
I had never ran the drag before and running a 10 year old stock thunderbird with 250k miles on it.
I was a blast! Sure the car was slow, but it gave me an idea of things on the track. I was totally clueless goin there tonight. Few guys I met on another forum were goin out so I joined up to Test and Tune night.
I waited after a few runs to do some burnouts, just for fun, I wasnt out for times, just fun. Didnt seem to matter, burnout or not, I dont think the wheels broke traction of the start. Hard to tell, every thing I went up against was so freakin loud I couldnt hear/feel if they did. and was running 10's. All in all it was a great learning experience.
Heres most runs. dont laugh!

Well if you are using street tires, no burnout to be done it actually hurts the take off. avoid the box and water. then launch out of the line. when its time. just feel the light out. and know your cars power and throttle reaction.
if your just showing off apply brakes and hit the floor board. of course remember your paying for the tires and transmission repairs when it goes south.
if running drag tires. apply brakes and do a quick snap of the throttle to start the spin. then do a med to long burn with lower rpms. as this will heat the tires up really good.
I my self set the line lock and hit the floor then burn up to 3500-4000 rpms release lock and role through to the stage.
its what ever works for you and your car though.
Yeah thats what most people seemed to be doing. I myself drove around the water, then backed up only with the rear wheels in the water and let er rip. Didnt want the front street tires bringing any water to the line.
I'm getting a line lock put in so I can get the tires hot. I'm running Nitto Drag Radials and I can't get em to hook. My 60 foot times are killing me. If I can get traction, I'll be well into the 13s.
How long are heating up your drag radials for? Most people i know with the new mickey thompsons just do a very light burn out, but they are also only running 11's. It depends on how much power you are making. Try a short one and then a long one and see which works better, it's all trial and error. Tom
