Default Stock 2006 GT needs 1/4 mile tips

Below is my best so far at the track but I could use some advice for launch RPM and shift points. My 2006 is bone stock minus the stock airbox snorkel. I am running a manual trans with stock all-season street tires on stock 18 inch rims. I've been launching at about 1500 rpms but still get a lot of tire spin. I shifted at 6000 (just before the rev limiter kicks on) for the times below, finishing the 1/4 mile in 3rd gear. I did not adjust tire pressures. I left all 4 tires at 33 PSI.

R/T 0.418
60' 2.107
330' 5.833
1/8 @ mph 8.883 @ 80.97
1000' 11.490
1/4 @ mph 13.678 @ 103.3

I don't think you need any tips at all, thats a very good time for being stock. 33 PSI might be a bit much and could be causing your tire spin at 1500, but they're street tires so don't expect to much out of them. Get some DR's and start dropping some money into that stang, you'll be seeing 12's before you know it!

Funky, thanks for the vote of confidence! The run above was only my second time at the track (GLD in WI), still very much a novice!

I guess my main problem is consistancy. I think I have the 1-2 and 2-3 shift points at near 6K figured out but even trying to start my launch at 1500 my 60' times are all over the board (2.107 up to 2.510).

Sometimes I feel I am still spinning the tires through the 60' mark. I understand the street tires are the week link. Should I be rollling up the throttle from 1500 or just mashing on it at the 3rd yellow? Or somewhere in between?

Can anyone suggest a tire pressure for street tires? Is 20 PSI on an all season tread too low?

Should I do a burn out or just a quick spin to clean 'em off a little bit?

I do plan making modifications but I really wanted to see how good I can get it in stock form so I have a good baseline on which to compare the results of the modifications. I think my first mod will be a Steeda Tri-Ax, followed by some drag radials. It seems there is no use doing any power mods with the stock all season tread!

That's about what my guestimates for time were around!!! (stopwatch held by passenger)

I have the 05, and mine's yellow, and everybody know's yellow is a fast color!:thumbsup

Good job!!!

I can't wait to get some stickier tires on mine...but they have to wear out first!

Yellow is faster, especially to RADAR guns, maybe only surpassed by red!

With more practice at a drag strip, you'll manage to wear out those rear tires sooner:thumbsup

First of all, great times for a bone stock GT! Congrats!

Second, get your self some good DR's and "mash it on the 3rd yellow". You won't be spinning through the 60 foot mark and you will become much more consistent. This will also give you a consistent baseline ET. And I totally agree with you, no point on doing any power mods until you can get to the ground what you already have.

As far as the stock tires, go around the water if you can and don't do a burn out at all. If there is no way around the water, then burn out it is. But your stock tires don't respond to heat like the DR's do, so your goal would be to make sure your tires are dry and don't have any crap on them.

I tried today to be more aware of feathering the gas on launch with the stock all season radials. While I didn't quite get to my 13.6 best from Wednesday night, I did get a little more consistant.

Best today, 13.7. Now I wait to pick a drag radial and a spare set of rims for drags.

Anyone know what is the widest that will fit on the rear of a 2006 GT? I saw an 18 by 10 that looked good on an 05/06 but the owner couldn't quote me the specific offset/backspacing while at the track today. Will a 16 fit on a GT over the stock brakes?

I'm not sure how much the 06 rear varies to the 02, but I got 16" rims on mine with the DR's. I can fit as small as a 15" on the rear, but not the front. I think 20 psi is alittle low for your street radials, I wouldn't go below 25 and just a quick spin to get the crap off the tires.

Hey nice times! I wish mine were that good. To answer the qustion about 16 in rims no (acording to Modified Mustangs May 2006 issue) they wont fit because of caliper clearance issues. 17s may fit but I didnt say in the article and I think some 05-06 GTs come stock with 17s but Im not sure.

Great times! The best magazine time I've seen for the GT is 13.7, so you've bested that!

Work on your reaction time. You want go go when you just think the last amber light is going to light up.

damn good times man! Try shifting into 4th gear....I know you have the same gearing as my Mach and lots of mach owners have suggested to shift into 4th rather than finishing in 3rd. I've never tried it, but it might be worth a shot. But DR's for sure will help you out with some already good times for being stock.

Oops, wanted to add about heating up stock tires didnt matter to me.

I thought it might some, and maybe it did for my 1-2 shift, but off the line no change after a smoky burnout.
I run the Goodyear F1's and they get slippery when colder out, so I figured a little heat might help em, but nope.
