Default 89gt are the bumpers holding the covers up?

i have an 85 gt bracket car that is stripped of everything and then some. we just got done building an 89gt and getting ready to lighten it up as much as possible. already have a glass hood and lexan is next. the bumpers look pretty bulky and was thinking about getting rid of them. my question is will the bumper covers sag and if they do whats the easiest way to hold them up and stay as light as possible.

i have seen some cars with no bumpers under the covers. if it does sag you could put some foam in them to hold them up.
