Default New to racing and I need some advice

Hi I am brand new to this sight and this is my first post.

I am considering building a fox body car for drag racing. I am interested in a low budget build up but would like the car to be in the 10's. Any help would be appreciated.

thanks in advance Cup

Hiya, welcome to the site.
Planning out a 10 second car takes quite a bit of planning and a large budget. You'd need things like this...

ENGINE:
351 based stroker, preferably a 408 with forged internals, AFR 205 heads, Edelbrock Victor JR intake, Mighty Demon 750 carb, 1 7/8 long tube headers, Comp Cams solid roller cam part number 35-771-8. It has .608/.614 lift, 280/286 duration (242/248 duration at .050 lift), a power band of 2500-6500, and valve lash settings at .016/.018. But you'll need at least 10:1 compression with this cam. Some double valve springs with 10 degree retainers/locks and 1.6 roller rockers.

TRANSMISSION:
For a strictly drag car, a C4 tranny by Performance Automatic or Dynamic Racing Transmissions would be best. With that cam, you need a stall speed converter with a 3000 stall rating, a manual valvebody or a good quality shift kit, and both companies offer trannys with full roller internals.

REAR END:
An 8.8 with at least 31 spline axles and a spool (or posi like an Eaton or Detroit Locker for street use) that uses C Clip eliminators. Have the axle tubes welded to the center section. Then get some adjustable upper and lower control arms that have spherical bearings (for street use) or delrin bushings (for strictly drag use). Some Eibach or Steeda drag springs front and rear and some adjustable struts/shocks front and rear like those from Strange, Koni, or QA1.

TIRES:
Wheels should be 15 X 3 1/2 in front with 165/60 tires and the rear could get up to 15 X 9 and a 275/60 rear tire, either drag radial or actual slick.

CAR:
Best one to use would be a 1979-1993 LX notchback for the lower weight. But if you get past 11.49 in the quarter, you'll need a full 6 point roll cage or you'll be kicked off the track for violation of the safety rules. Cages aren't hard to find, or get, or have welded in.

POWER ADDER:
The easiest way would be with an NOS Cheater system, it adds up to 250 hp. You could go with a supercharger or turbo but those kits are another $4000 or so.

I gave ideas for a strictly drag car, and a few streetable items too. If this was to be used on the street, a few things would change.

Thanks Eagle

Maby I am asking for too much. I thought a ten second car would be more obtainable than that. I would like to build it for street strip. In your above post you didnt mention the amount of HP needed. Any suggestions?

if you are looking to build a street/strip car it will take more hp because it will weigh a lot more. i am running 11.60s with only about 400 hp but the car is stripped and just a strip car. it weighs 2700lbs withme in it (i weigh 280).probably for your case the bigger the motor the better because torque is the name of the game otherwise you end up with an engine that has to rev up to much to make power. if you are not going to spray or blow it and plan on keeping it under 7000 rpm i wouldnt worry too much about the bottom end. you can get good cast pitons and crank pretty reasonably but i would buy forged rods. spend allyour money on heads and valve train and intake etc.

A fully weighted GT is around 3200-3300. And that's the type car I was thinking of when making that outline for the car, sorry if I wasn't clear about it. It does take hp, it'd take 400+ hp to make the 10's but you also have to get it to the ground. But it is very possible to make it and also be streetable.

If you are new to the game I would start with something a little slower then a street car that runs 10's. Since you said you were on a budget you will being doing a lot of work your self to save money, and that is quite a big project for your first one.
