I think you are over worried about it. I understand you don't want to hurt your car, but I think you will be fine. What SCT is saying is if you run the 93 octane tune (U.S.) you would need to put 98 octane (E.U.) gas in it. As for the gears you would't loose much top end, but you would lose gas mileage driving at high speeds. Around town you would be fine.

My problem isnt just that I will be runngin an inprecise octane/tuner setup, but that Im limiting myself to just that one setting. Having bought the tuner it would be nice to have the option to use all of it.

I will have a good think about the gears... im very tempted

If the octanes break down like you have said they should be the same. You should be able to use all three tunes depending on what gas you decide to run. If you have to you can always back the timing off, I installed my 91 tune today, had a half tank of 87 in it filled up with 93 and some octane booster everything is fine. All you can do is try it, there shouldn't be any problems.

Right, So how do I "back off" the timing? Is this done in the tuner?
I think this is where I was wanting to get to in the first place... having the ability to change the tuner setup myself to suit and slight differences betweent the US/UK octanes.

Yes the tuner can do this when you scroll through it has rpm increments where you can adjust the timing. I think it is in 2k rpm sets. If you have to do this I would get with a tech to make sure you are doing right, this is something I haven't messed with on mine.
