Hi All, I’ve just ordered a JLT intake with an SCT X3 tuner direct from JLT. When I ordered it, I was suppressed to hear that I didn’t need to give any or my cars details regarding current modifications. When I’ve looked around at other companies who also sell the tuner, they ask for specific information in order to set the tuner up for you. I am worried that I’m going to receive the tuner and have to do my own setups. Without any experience with the X-3 I am very worried that im going to mess up my mustangs computer setup, or not get the best out of the tuner. Does anyone know how idiot proof these tuners are? Also, Im in the UK. Ive heard that the octane ratings are different between the UK and US. If anyone knows anything about this I would be very grateful to hear from you. So far ive been told that 91 octane of fuel in the US is equivalent to UK 95 but would love to have this confirmed by someone else.
First off I put one of these on a few weeks ago, great product. Installation was easy and the X3 tuner easy to use. If you have other mods done, depending on what they are you may or may not need to tune for them. JLT does not build specific tunes (I don't think) you would have to get in touch with a tuner tell them your mods they will send you a tune.

At the moment ive only got some SLP Power Flow Axel backs. Do you think I would need a specific tune for this?
Can I go direct to SCT for this, or will they tell me to go away because I bought it from JLT?
Mufflers will not need a tune, unless you do headers. I don't think SCT does custom tunes either but not positive. There will be a tune in there for the JLT. When you get it a menu will come up scroll through it will have cold air or air filter can't remember go through that till you find JLT. Set what octane you want to run thats all you should need to do. There are lots of people on here that can help if you have trouble. My first time went O.K.

Great, thanks for that. What did you notice from installing the system? Also, i am hoping to notice some sort of air sucking noise while driving... did you get any of that?
Yes you will be able to tell the difference. Better throttle response and mileage(if you are not to hard on it) I am just running the 87octane tune right now and could still tel a difference. The 93 tune will be going in soon. You can here it sucking air more but not real loud, I think the exhaust covers most of the noise up, since it takes more throttle to suck air in more noise out hte back. Took me about 30 min. to install, and the tune takes maybe 10-15 if you pull the fuses like they say. Not sure if its neccesary but I did since it was my first time.

So do you have to get another custom tune done jsut to get it onto the 93 octane? I was kind of hoping as my car is pretty basic (just the SLPs) that I could just increase or decrease one of the settings in the tuner (not sure which one)
No, no custome tune the tuner comes with three tunes in it 87,91,93 octane just set what one you want to use. Did you get the custom match painted JLT? Threre is a picture in my gallery of mine installed. The info you are getting from your post in the talk section is correct, thats where I got my help when I bought mine. If you put gears in it the tuner will adjust for that to. JLT sends a copy of instructions with the tuner that helps, but there is always here.

Unfortunatly my life is not as easy as that. The octane ratings are different between the EU and US.
So I would need to be able to get into the SCT setup to make some kind of adjustment... scared? very! I have a bad feeling im going to mess my pride and joy up!!!
I know how you feel I was worried when I first put in my tune. I'm not positive on this but it looks like you would run the tunes the same. If you were going to run 91(eu) you would run the 87(us) tune.I don't think you will have any problems with it. You have the octane ratings figured already, should be no problems. I just started mine took it easy on it make sure no codes were going to come up then took it out on the road and floored it! Just listen for any knocking(detonation) if you have that you need to adjust acordingly. Really I don't think it will be a problem though, I think you will enjoy it.

Its just that I have read that running the wrong octane can do damage, so want to get it just right. DO you know what setting is changed on the tuner to increase or decrease the octane level?
I think im going to have to stick a note on the back of the tuner for all of this so I dont forget what=what.
And yes, Ive gone for the matching Mineral Grey intake. I just hope its heat treated paint otherwise its gonna crack!
The tuner will have the three settings for the octane tunes. Just pick which octane the go to "adjust" settings scroll through to the cold air intake and enter in the jlt intake. You should have to adjust any thing else. In that section you can adjust for gears, tire size, timing everything its all there just scroll through till you find what you want. As far as the paint on the tube I don't think it will get that hot, it is a "cold air intake"

OK cool. Thanks for all this... its a great help, and your saving me hours of chat at my local garage.
Back to the gears then... If I got 4:10s, I assume thats going to have my highway cruise RPMs way up? Over here I get away with going 80-90 MPH all the way home, so is there a setup for maximum acceleration still with a high final gear?
This all depends on what you want out of your car.4:10 gears at 80-90 m.p.h. will be running 3k rpm or higher. If you plan on racing alot its the way to go. If its just for cruising I say noway. I'm not sure what gear the autos came with, my 5spd. has a 331 gear. Acceleration is fine with it,if I were to change the highest I would go is 373.

I really am in tow minds about the gears. I REALLY want a better 0 - 60 time, but am not sure if I want to give up my top end speed.
On the tuner front, Ive decided to get intouch with SCT directly via their support e-mail. Unfortunatly I don think the guy ive been dealing with speaks very good English!
Ive had to try and explain the situation 3 times and his answer has just been to use the US octane settings that come with the tuner. Ahhhhhhh!!! Ive tried to explain that in their own user manual it warns you not to use the wrong octane rating with a certian tune, and that if I use any of the U.S. preset tunes with U.K. fuel I will be doing exactly that.
Whats a gut to do?
