Default Greetings from Ireland

Hello people. How many of you are in the United Kingdom? How did you find the overall process of importing your car?? how much tax did you pay? How did you find gas prices and mileage? What advice do you have....I am hoping to import my own mustang soon but it would only be a 4.6 L V8...then I would be

. Replacing the suspension with Independent Rear

.getting her Ethanol ready

.paint jobs etc

Please stay in touch!!

Thanks

Welcome to AFM. We don't have a LOT of European members. We do have a member from stateside that moved to Switzerland I believe not long ago. Gas milage is typically somewhere in the 20 mile per gallon range. I'm not exactly sure what the conversion to L/km would be. Of course some people get better milage and others get worse. It all depends on how you drive the car. As for an independent rear suspension, I know it can be done with the 99-04 models. Not real sure about the 05 and newer models. Ethanol ready...I assume you mean an ethanol/gasoline blend of 85/15 or so. That as well can be done. I'm not exactly sure what needs to be done to achive this with the 4.6L motor.

Welcome to the forums... As a fellow European I welcome you to the club.

I never imported the car. It was sitting at a dealer over here, and I was looking for something different. Guess you just gotta bump into stuff like this. As to taxes... There is a BPM cost here in the Netherlands (which is basically taxes on new vehicles) which is a hefty percentage of the value of the car. Which gets added to the standard list price for the Netherlands.

In all honesty it doesn't make any car that much more attractive to buy, especially once you start comparing the price of a vehicle with the price of a similar vehicle in the countries around the Netherlands. Then again, taking the BPM off the price (to comply with European countries and legislation) would devalue any car massivly. Not something we Dutchies look forward to, despite the fact that it'll make cars cheaper, which is good I suppose.

Further taxes include roadtax, aswell as a massive load of taxes on the gasoline. So in essence this car is making the government really happy... If I leave the environmental aspect out of it.

As to finding information... There's plenty on the web! Hit Google and browse a bit. You'll likely find anything you'd want to know.

Lastly gas mileage... Citydriving a 4.6V8 (stock) it comes to 18 Miles per Gallon, which equates to 7.65 Kilometer per Liter. Highway driving can improve it up to 26 Miles per Gallon (or 11.05 Kilometer per Liter). The actual usage is more or less based on what you drive mostly (city/highway) and how heavy your foot is.

If you keep to 20 Miles per Gallon as the average usage, that would equate to about 8.5 Kilometer per Liter.

Run some conversions yourself to your hearts content: http://www.onlineconversion.com/fuel_consumption.htm

Just make sure that you use the US (liquid) gallons, and not the UK ones... They differ. And as it is an american car you'd need the US measurements.

I have looked into haveing a bike sent over and most of them wanted about $1600 to ship it (door to port). When I had my car sent over by the military my paperwork said it costed them $1800 to send my car from NY to England. With the pound to $ ratio at the moment at about 1 to .50 you could say it would cost about 900 pounds to ship to England. Hope this helps

What are the chances of picking up a cheap V6 off an American stationed in the UK?? Do you guys pay tax or registration fees on your imports?

Thanks.

TK,
I just typed an awesome reply 5 paragraphs long and the freakin computer dumped it!! So go on these sites and look for Americans here in Europe selling cars:

US Military Mart - We want to sell your car! Guaranteed Sale, Consignment Sale, Private Ads. consignment dealer in Germany, by the way some of your Irish mafia lads run this place, but good lads though!!

Stars and Stripes: Independent U.S. military news from Iraq, Afghanistan and bases worldwide American newspaper in Europe, go to the European classifieds.

Default More on US spec cars in Europe

TK,
As you can see, they are a bargain compared to the prices you guys pay here!! The issue will be what your Customs Office charges you to import the car!! They want to wring as much taxes out of you as they can. More on that later.

Hi, new to ATF, i too have been trying to get a mustang over to ireland, an old vintage model, dont mind if was a bit banged up would want it as a project to work on, unfortunately i had never figured out how much it was to ship over, is there a site for a shipping company that deals with this kind of stuff or even a passenger ferry from america to europe.

the good thing is that in ireland you do not have to pay car tax on vintage cars however there is a lot of drawbacks!

The insurance requirements are a pain, you need a full license of 5 years, over 25 and have another car and thats before you even pay the premium.

I also believe that it is very expensive to register a foreign car (left hand drive) here, even my uncle got a Focus Gt from England and it cost him a packet.

we'll either way its interesting to be here and looking forward to talking to ye and sharing info.

Sean
