Hi,

I have a werid idle issue going on with my 2001 Mustang GT.

Hi,

I have a werid idle issue going on with my 2001 Mustang GT. When I start my car in the morning to go to work and it is warming up my car runs at a perfect idle, about at 1000 rpm and when it warms up it sits at 750 rpm ( have a manual transmisson also if that matters) When I drive away and come up to a red light a block or two away my car is sitting at at 2200 rpm. Sometimes if I shut my car off at the light an restart it and it will be at a normal idle until I drive away and get to the next light (when I am driving it is nice and smooth the idle is high but not rough)

What I have tried to do fix the issue is
1) cleaned the Throttle body
2) cleaned the idle air control
3) New air filter
4) Ran my code scanner, clean no codes and all the monitors check out clean including the EGR

I used MAF cleaner to make sure it did not hurt any electronics.

The cleaning the idle air did seem to help for a couple of days and I taught I had it fixed. Do you think that my idle air control is just bad, do they fail, or is this the Mass Air Senor? Since it idles perfect until I drive it away.

Thanks for the help :bigthumbsup

Well, were do I begin. It's been 40 years since my Fastback last ran and today was the "Start-Up Day". I've been waiting for this day for almost 3 years not knowing what the outcome would be.

I had done everything I thought that needed to be done correctly to start the car. All new wires were added, new motor and T-5 tranny, bolted up the clutch and etc. All vacuum and fuel lines hooked up along with the hoses, plus many more things to get this old Mustang running again.

I started by rolling the car out of the garage and put it up on stands. I had a bunch of people there to help and watch. The first thing I did was hook up the battery cables. That was a little scary because I didn't want to see smoke. The battery cables were hooked up and no smoke. My son sitting in the car said the lights just came on, (courtesy lights) That was a good start. Then I un-hooked the distributor wire to turn over the engine without it firing. I told my son to turn the key to start the engine. He turns the key and just the starter was turning, not the engine. I banged on the starter and still no engine Turing over, just the starter. The starter is running but not engaging to catch the flywheel. Now I'm getting a little worried. Did I hook up the wires correctly, is this the correct starter or flywheel?? I get under the car, pull the starter and looked at it. The gear will move out and everything looks good. I hook up the starter wires and I polarized the starter against the tranny. Sparks flew when my son turned the key and I saw the gear slide out to engage the flywheel. I bolted up the starter and told my son to try and start the car again. He turns the key and BINGO, the motor is turning over. I had him do it about 4 times with about a 2-3 second turning over time. Then I put the distributor wire back in the coil, put a little gas in the carb and said to everyone, are you ready, this may be it. My son turns the key and the motor fires right up. It took a few tries but the motor stayed running. Everything seemed good. I adjusted the idle to give it a little more rpm and she stayed running on her own. Hardly any smoke came out after this engine was sitting for about 3 year full of fogging oil.

Now I get in the car and reved it up. I looked at the gauges, they are all WORKING! I couldn't believe it. I looked at the original Rally Pac and it was also working, that was the most surprising thing to me. I let it get up to temp and when the thermostat opened up the temp dropped a little, so I know that was working too. I put it in gear and spun the tires. The tranny was working with the clutch. Reverse worked as well. I drove the car around the yard and everything seemed good. The new manual rack and pinion was easy to turn and had a good full radius of a turn.

I'm so excited and surprised that I did all this myself and of the outcome. I will post a video soon of just about what I just said.
Also, I am swapping out the rear end. Does anyone have a good procedure for this. I have tried to google around and find something, but haven't found anything.
I appears that my transmission popping out of 1st gear over the last 6 months, finally did a number on my differential.

I can cruise in 5th below 1500rpms all day, but once i get the urge to have some fun it dies when I open the throttle. I can stop, shut the motor off then restart it and it runs fine for another 5-10 minutes. I have cleaned the throttle body and MAF. I'm lost and its getting annoying. Ready to set fire to her.

Hello, I'm new to the Mustang world. I've just acquirred a beautiful Yellow 2002 Mustang GT convertible 5 spd. It's my first Stang, bit I still own a 1986 Fiero GT (since 1994 in restoration stage now), and a functionnal but not used MGB 1974.

Last week end when I purchased my Mustang, that been over 11 years since the last time I drove a sport car (Isuzu Impulse RS Turbo AWD). Since then, I was an ordinary guy driving mini-van and a Yaris...

Before using the Stang this coming summer I want it to be completely fresh with new fluids, new bushing, new everything we normally change after all those year of tears and wears.

I will need a workshop manual for doing correctly several of those things (mesurement, dissasembly, check etc).

I have a 2003 workshop manual. Is there some important info in the 2003 manual that cannot be used on a 2002 car? Or vice versa? Does a 2002 GT is much different (engine, tranny etc) from a 2003 GT or there are almost the same as twin (no real evolution between the two year) ?

Thanks for your reply.

After this, the car feels great and tighter than ever although I started hearing a thumping/knocking from right rear end. I go back to my guy, puts it up on the lift and checks everything 3x right in front of me and insists everything is solid.
After I leave his shop, noise disappears on the ride home but comes back 2 days later. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas what this sound could be if its not rear shocks, springs or pan hard bar.....

OK, helping a friend clear out an old horse trailer on his property. He is a body-man with a body shop at this location. In this trailer is a brand new never run SVO motor and head. It an assembled shortblock and an assembled head, but in near perfect condition. It is definitely a turbo motor as it has dished pistons. I also have some of the other parts, namely the intercooler, valve cover, distributor and exhaust manifold.

Just how do I go about identifying this? Casting number from engine is RF-E3ZE-6015-DA ( or DO) and the only casting numbers I see on the head are E07.

I'd love any and all advice, looks like I found me a project!

I was told this was an SVO motor, if it isn't what did it come out of? Definitely a Ford 2.3L Turbo though.

Hello from Davis, California! I've been using these forums over the last year or so and the advice from you guys has been a lifesaver. Thought I'd finally throw my hat in the ring. Here's my ride:

Your basic GT/CS with a few mods. Nuked the stripe in favor of the 5.0 badge. Added Ford's deck lid panel and replaced the GT with the stock CS. TSW Nurburgring 19x9.5 wheels, DG Custom louvers, Borla Stingers, Saleen S281 grille, Raxiom headlights.

I also used the Metra kit with a Kenwood DNX7190HD navi system to replace the stock stereo. Other than that just a few knick knacks, shift knob, floor mats, ect. I still want to add the Saleen S281 hood to finish it up. No engine mods as of yet, I'm concerned about warranty issues and it's plenty fast as is!

I had Steeda Sport springs intalled last week. I really wanted to get some d-specs or Koni's but the shop couldn't get them for a while. I figured since I wasn't planning on tracking the car and using it for a DD, we agreed on the Steeda Pro-Action non-adjustables, since they were readily available.

Been driving it for a week now and I just don't think I can live with the ride as a daily driver. It handles fantastic, but any road that isn't perfectly smooth, my kidneys are getting a heck of a workout. No funny noises or bangs or anything like that, but I just feel like the shocks and struts are definitely valved more for track use than anything else. I sent the shop a note asking if they'd work with me to replace these Steedas with some adjustables, maybe some d-specs or Koni's. I'm sure they'll work with me, they're awesome, just wanted some more opinions.

I believed the hype on Steeda's website, such as "outstanding ride quality" and "better ride than competing brands", blah blah blah. I know they are Tokicos that are valved to Steeda's specs and all of that, they are definitely nice, quality shocks. I'll put my question out to those of you that run adjustables. Do you believe I can adjust them out to softer settings than what these Steedas are valved to? :?: I told my wife I was going to live with it, but after driving around today, I decided it's too important to me to not try and correct it.

Thanks and anyone from Steeda is welcome to chime in as well! :bigthumbsup Maybe I'll just be told to buck it up, old man, what did you expect? lol :heha:

Today while waiting in a drive thru a white Ford E-350 Cargo Van attempted to cut in front of me but misjudged his turn, and ran straight into my passenger side.....

caught the fender at the wheel, and dragged it, the bumper and the headlight forwards ripping the bumper and the headlight off the car and concaving the fender.

Also broke the central plastic frame that holds the bumper, lights and such. I will probably need that, a fender, bumper, headlights, and the brackets and hardware to remount them all.

I hate stupid people. this didnt need to happen, i was happy with the look, i had rebuilt the front just the way i liked it...

Hey yall, I need your ideas on what is wrong with my 65 289 convertible!
There is a noise coming from the engine once the temp starts going up a little and the rpm are low(just hit the accelerator a little or not at all). Cold or hitting the acc, the noise is suddenly gone.
Additionally, its louder when I do have D or R, while in parking mode or neutral, it is not as loud.
I suppose its coming from the engine, as its stil there when the car is not moving at all, which hints at the C4 not being the culprit.
I tried an additive to the oil which is to damp potential problems, but it wouldnt work!
What is your guesses?

Thanks a lot and greetings from Austria,
What is actually involved in swapping gears is it just buy a new "pumpkin" or what. Is there any good source to get familar with them? Also for the gears I was thinking of a 3:25 ratio from what ive read. It will be a DD seeing the track several times a year, but majority of driving will be under 60ish. I have a manual 3spd with 302. Any info would be great!
Thanks, Lance
