So here's the story. I've always wanted a Mustang, I used to own a 1998 GT which was beautiful and well maintained even if it was almost ten years old at the time I purchased it. But, as fate would have it, someone wrecked into it while I was shopping for a new oil filter ironically enough, totalling the car :weeps . So now that I'm deployed overseas to Iraq with the Oregon Army National Guard, I have another opportunity to own a brand new 2010 Mustang GT, 5 Speed, Trak Pak, in Kona Blue, built from the factory. BUT, here's where I need help before finalizing the deal and getting it built and shipped to my house to wait for me once I return from my deployment. I've read review after review, blog after blog, looked at hundreds of pictures before getting this far. Makes no sense in spending $35K on a car that I'm not absolutely sure I'm gonna be happy with owning. So here's a couple of questions to current 2010 Mustang GT, 5 Speed owners who've actually owned one for more than a week ;

How does the car perform after the initial week?

Has the handling really lived up to the Car and Driver magazine hype?

How does the ride feel with day to day driving?

Any known issues? (i.e. plastic breaking suddenly, 12v port no longer functioning, ect. ect.)

How does it sound inside the cabin? (ford spoke of the notes being piped into the cabin) is it deafening? or annoying?

What is the suggested (and typical cost of) window tinting products?

What oil is best used for this car and what fuel is recommended?

Does the leather feel weak (will crack and tear easily) like it did in previous years?

How solid do the throws feel when shifting? Does the clutch feel mushy?

Is the rear seat okay with having passengers in it like in the 1998's to 2004's?

How roomy is the trunk area?

How well does the SYNC system work and is there an Ipod USB port? (there was some mention of it in a blog but I couldn't confirm it anywhere)

I'm sure I'll think of more questions as they come up but this is the first time me buying a brand new car, at 25 and in the military you'd think I would have by now but I haven't, sadly. So any suggestions on top of those questions would be greatly appreciated.

Before I was driving one of the largest pickup trucks on the road 2004 Ford F250 4door 4x4 aprox 20 feet long, and was getting cut off all the time as if I were invisable. During the 5 years I owned the truck I must have been cut off over 2500 times (not exagerating). I was considering personalized tags IM HERE :waveyfor the longest time, and would have put an air horn if they were not illegal in Virginia. One would think it was going to be the same no matter what you drive, and I'm sure I will get cut off sooner then later but still amazed.

So I'm thinking about MGP Caliper Covers on my new Stang...
I definitely want to go this route instead of painting. I've been looking at them on American Muscle and like the ones that have Mustang on the fronts and GT on the rear...but I'm torn about color.

Part of me wants RED, but I'm afraid the RED that they come in is going to be a brighter shade than my Candy Red Metallic and clash...might look weird. So, I'm thinking about black. I plan on keeping my stocker silver wheels (19")...

Anybody got any words of wisdom with these things? Install does not look bad.

Well, I've owned her a week and the first mod is complete. Dropped her off this morning with my tint man and picked her up about lunch time...

SolarGard NR Supreme 15% all the way around, with a windshield strip. It still has a little drying to do, but it's one of the best tint jobs I've seen. Virtually flawless, clean, crisp...just the right color.

I've got some experience in the window film industry, and I use SolarGard. It's a great film and this new Supreme Series is about the clearest film I've seen - No distortion, crystal clear. It has a charcoal base and is just the right color from the outside. It has a slight green tint from the inside...nothing crazy, but just the slightest hint of green. While I'm not necessarily a fan of that, it's so slight that it's not enough to turn me off of it. The clarity is absolutely worth it.
Lifetime warranty also.

I'm definitely a fan of the look. Tinting the windows is the first thing that I have done to just about every vehicle I have owned. :bigthumbsup

So I'm a week into this new 2010 GT...loving it...and thinking about mods to make me love it even more, of course.

I don't want to go overboard. (I have a bad tendency to do just that.)

I'm not real interested in exterior body mods, because, quite honestly, I love the car the way it sits. I don't want stripes, I don't want stick-on scoops and louvers and all that stuff. I want to keep it clean and smooth. I love the 19" sliver stocker wheels - clean and timeless look - OK by me! :bigthumbsup

I'll be getting the windows tinted this week. (a must) I'll be adding a remote start unit, and will probably pick up a Valentine 1 radar detector and mirror mount for it when money allows. That will keep the checkbook occupied for a bit.

BUT, beyond that, I'm leaning in the direction of performance enhancements and engine dress up. I'd like to dress up the engine bay with billet caps and covers and such...those seem to be fairly obtainable. Oil Cap, Brake Fluid Cap, Power Steering Cap, Radiator Cap, A/C fill caps, strut towers, etc...(Don't see a billet fuse box cover for a 2010 anywhere though.. ??)

And for performance enhancements, I think I might start with a Brenspeed package...one of their intake/tune combos...can anyone recommend one from experience for a 2010 GT that's stock otherwise? I just want a noticeable increase in HP and Torque for my money...and something cool to talk about. LOL

I mounted a wheel on the front spindle to allow me to spin the tire while striping with One-Shot Light Blue. It totally changes the look of the wheel. After everything cures overnight, I'll reseat the beads and mount them on the car. I heard the Mustangs had band mounted TPMS, if so they went to valve stem mount for '10. The stem looks like a GM stem.

Hello!

I am seriously considering factory ordering a new 2010 Mustang GT. This is mainly because I don't want charcoal black leather interior, and that is about the only color on any lots within 300 miles of my home.

Does anyone have experience with doing this and especially is there anything to look out for such as: does it take forever (more than 8 weeks)? do you get the rebates (they are saying yes but don't want to write a contract until the car arrives)? other considerations you wish you had thought of before you did it?

Honestly the dealer seems fairly reasonable about the whole thing but I'm just wondering if ya'll have any experience and think this is worth doing an order or better to find one you like and just buy it off the lot?

Thanks,
Looks:
Winner: Camaro.
Second place: Challenger
The vast majority of people seem to prefer to the looks of the Camaro. There are also a lot of people who love the Challenger while the Mustang seems to mostly be preferred by Mustang loyalists and *cough* women….
Commentary: I think if the 2010 Mustang had gone missing for the last 5 years and we were not so used to seeing it around, this might be a very different situation. My personal feeling is that a lot of the personal preference on visual appeal comes not from the actual looks but from the newness of the challenger and camaro designs.

Ride Quality:
Second Place: Camaro
Both the Challenger and the Camaro have IRS. The challenger is the “Cadillac” of the big three muscle cars and it rules the slow cruise.
Commentary: The Mustang tends to beat you up a bit more on the daily commute, however it has been pointed out that it handles the road better than just about any solid/live rear axle out there..so don’t go away with the impression that it’s going to hurt you. My RX8 was A LOT worse to ride in and it HAD IRS. J
Practicality:
Winner: Challenger
Second place: Mustang
Let’s face it, if you are mostly interested in Trunk space and 5 passengers seating for your muscle car, the challenger rules. If you are the type of person who has to haul people and things from A to B but you still want a muscle car, you can get more done with a Challenger…..Period.
Urban Areas:
Winner: Mustang
Second Place: Challenger.
Spending most of my time in Atlanta, I am forced to give this a split decision nod and make Mustang the winner in the city. With its superb visibility and smaller dimensions you can dart in and out of traffic with ease, finding yourself only envious of 370z owners and min-cooper drivers. The mustang fits better into the TINY parking spots better than either of the competitors and you can scoot through road construction areas where the cones are in your lane on BOTH sides with confidence and without slowing down (less than the legal limit of course). With its Factory recommended 87 octane (both the Challenger and the Camaro have premium as the recommended ) fuel, the mustang will save a few extra dollars for those toll roads and weekend nights on the town while still having a respectable trunk for times when you need to “get out of town” for a while. J

Commentary: The camaro is a very distant third in this category. It is absolutely the least practical car in the lineup by a LONG shot. The car is wide, the visibility is dismal, back seat passenger room is the smallest, its recommended fuel is premium its trunk is a complete joke, and it’s the more expensive car in the line IF you consider what dealers are actually charging on the lots and not the MSRP.

Handling:
Winner: Mustang
Second: Camaro
Commentary: While it’s well known that the mustang easily out handles the competition, I want to make one point very clear. All versions of the mustang GT out handle the competition. There is a lot of talk that you have to buy a premium/track pack mustang and spend 33k to beat a Camaro and that is simply not true. Even the $27,900 base GT will out steer and out corner the competition in most circumstances. Stripped down of all of its toys and given a manual Transmission...the base GT is even that much lighter. Ford has done a lot of suspension tweaking on ALL 2010 models...which is the subject for another more technical discussion…nonetheless my conclusion is that ANY 2010 mustang GT will out steer and out corner ANY Camaro or Challenger. How do I know? Because A) I own one and B) I have driven them all. I have finally gotten comfortable enough to push mine in corners some and while it’s certainly no 350z or RX8, it sticks at lateral Gs beyond what most would be comfortable attempting. I would know more but there is ALWAYS something in front of me that I have to SLOW WAY down for it seems.

Stock Performance:
Winner: Camaro
Second Place: Mustang/Challenger Tie
Commentary: This Is the ONLY category Camaro guys want to discuss…ever. Just check out Camaro forums and you understand what I am saying. Why? Because this category is really all they have…unless you count “Bad ass” as a category…but I have already given them a win in that under the “looks” category. The argument: “Performance is the reason for buying a MUSCLE car in the first place.” I personally disagree. If PERFORMANCE was all that mattered, why buy a car? If that were ALL I wanted, I would buy a crotch rocket instead. J The Camaro does not TROUNCH the Mustang or the Challenger as they would have you believe. The Camaro wins…but Mustang/Challenger both compete admirably.
As you can see….the longer the race goes on…the further ahead the Camaro will be. I see a lot of “slowmarrow” comments on mustang forums. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is not slow. We can call it “impractimarow”, “blindspotmarow”, “notrunkmarow” “lardmaro”but we certainly should not be calling it “slowmarow” If Balls to the wall no holds barred performance at the cost of being inferior in most other categories is your thing, Camaro is definitely the car for you. Is this much different then 60’s, 70’s and 80’s? Not really. Although there have been many times when Mustang was faster, Camaro has hung its hat on sacrificing the practical for being faster or better looking. It is faster, it will win races, period. No need for debating this.
Modded Performance/Racing:
Winner: Mustang
Second: None
With its live rear axle and plethora of quality and inexpensive bolt on mods, Mustang wins hands down. Most of these Mods won’t even void your factory warranty! The very thing that works against the Mustang in the looks department wins it in this category. In short, it’s been around. This category will not apply to the majority of drivers however.

V6 Performance:
Winner: Camaro
Second: Tie
While the V8s of these three cars will keep up with or beat almost any other V8s on the road, that argument can only be made for the Camaros V6. If you pull up beside a Nissan 3.5 in your Mustang V6 or Challenger SE, you will be embarrassed.

Price Performance:
Winner: Unclear
If you are the type person who analyzes how much performance you are getting for your dollar you are probably buying the baste GT or the SS1, or possibly even the v6 Camaro. The base Mustang GT can be had for around $27,000 or less with rebates and with its comparable performance, edges out the Camaro. However, if you are buying the more expensive versions of either of these vehicles, the nod goes to Camaro…Especially if you are only looking at the MSRP and not the Camaro dealer mark ups. However, I have to wonder if the V6 Camaro might actually be king…IF you don’t mind having a low Torque machine in your drive way, comparably speaking. As impractical as I happen to think a Camaro is, the low priced v6 Camaro getting 29mpg certainly reels in some of that practical trade off. You will keep up with a Mustang GT about as well as a Mustang GT or Challenger RT keeps up with a Camaro SS….

Interior:
Winner: Mustang
Second: Camaro
I know this is highly subjective but the Camaro interior just seems too busy and over the top while the challenger strikes me as just plain boring. I think the Mustang is the perfect combination for an American Muscle car that’s an everyday driver. With the interior being mostly what the owner sees I must say I am very happy with what I see. I also am mentioning the supreme sound of the Mustang GT via the sound induction tube under this category, as it’s heard from INSIDE the car. If you ARE the type who loves options and toys…the Mustang wins with its available sync, glass roof, shaker 1,000 and my color…not to mention all the standard up end things usually available such as leather, blue tooth, etc etc.

Reliability:
Winner: Mustang
Second: None
The fact that a Mustang (referred to as Fix or Repair Daily) will have fewer mechanical break downs and fewer costly repairs is a foregone conclusion. But let me explain why. Pick up ANY Consumer Reports and you will notice one thing. The only reason why Dodge is not ranked DEAD LAST is because that position is currently occupied by GM. While I think it would be too harsh to refer to GM/Dodge as “junk” I will certainly say they have SERIOUS issues. Now, look up Ford in consumer reports and you will notice Ford has been getting the highest ratings possible for a while now. Toyota is thought of as the “king” of quality and a Ford Fusion bests a Camry in consumer reports. Another reason why the Mustang wins is simple experience. The current Mustang GT has been around. Ford has had YEARS to tweak and work the production bugs out of the 4.6 and also has spent the last 4 tweaking and working the bugs out of its current production platform. Conversely both the Challenger and the Camaro are new models that are bound to be riddled with problems as they get a few miles on them.

OK. I am thinking I would like to install one of these Infinity Bsselink II powered sub's into the car. Looks like it will fit behind the right wheel well in the trunk. That is my plan anyway. I can run the power and find a place for ground but I have some questions about the other parts of the installation.

The sub documentation says that there are "Speaker Level Inputs" on the sub already, which tells me that I do NOT need a line converter to use this sub/amp with my factory head unit? Correct?

My second question is... This Basslink II has speaker level inputs for the front and rear speakers. meaning, it looks like it wants a signal from my front speakers, as well as my rear. I would like to just have the rear give the signal, that way I do not have to run wire from the front of the car. Splicing and splitting the wires together is not an issue I have the proper tools for this, I just don't want to hassle the front's unless I have to. Seems like if I just did the rear inputs, my fade would just be off, like the sub would fade with my rear speakers. This is not an issue for me I leave the fade alone.

Here is a link to some documentation about the powered sub. Thanks for any info. I am just looking for some advice from someone with more experiance installing car stereo then myself. I always had it done "Professionaly". This time I want to do the work myself.

It's PDF format.
Another question is i will likely put a KB charger on it after the warrenty has expired and was wondering if i am limited with the vert compared to the coup b/c it is structurally not the same. My goal would be to get close to the mid 600's (HP)on pump gas, can the vert handle this?
Looking at exhaust at the moment, buy since not allot of $ my options are limited for now. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm looking into a pypes set with gt take offs, boomtube by "mac" dual exhaust kit, or magnaflow catback. I like the sound of the boomtubes best but I've head allot of negative on the net from install, to extra brackets needed for install, to overall product durability. With that being said I'm probably going with the pypes. I found them with gt tAke offs for $330 shipped.

I pulled the bulb out on both sides to check if they are both lit the same brightness...they definitely appear so.
It seems that once i put the bulb back in the housing, the light is dimmer. :angry
Has anyone had a housing issue with their 2010? Is is a reflector inside the housing issue?
Like I said the bulbs seem to be the same brightness- all the filaments are lighting so it's not a burnt out bulb...or a 'bad' ground...
ANY THOUGHTS would be appreciated. PLEASE REPLY.
Also has anyone taken a housing out on the 2010? IF so, how is it done and how hard is it to do?
THANKS!!!!:yelpleased:
