I know that I am the third owner. It has been in my possession for over 3 decades and finally got the funds and time to restore the car. It is almost done, want to get some driving time on it before the Ford Nationals in Carlisle.
Thanks in advance.

I purchased this fastback a year ago, drove it home, stripped it down to a rolling chassis and took it to the paint shop for a little tlc.
Like a recent post, asking about keeping a future purchase original or customizing it, I pondered that question for quite awhile before deciding to modify it a little to suite my needs. It came with a 289 auto, so if I'm going to make any changes, now's the time. I opted for the Ford Racing 351W crate motor and T5 World class tranny. I'm putting on SSB front disc brakes power brakes, and will change the gearing in the rear end. Except for rims, the car will look original on the outside and inside including the air conditioner, but should have a healthy exhaust note. Any coments or suggestions you may have would be appreciated as I still have a way to go before it sees the street. Thanks!

PS, I did keep the original parts.

This is mine and my dads pride and joy. We have been restoring this car for about two years now with what little time and resources we have had available. It is a 1969 5.2 litre V8 fastback Mustang which we shipped over all the way from Colorado (USA) to the docks of sunny Themsport (London). we have formed a company called CAM (Classic American Muscle) and hope that one day we will be able to restore these beautiful pieces of American history as a full time occupation. As for now the main concern is getting the company off the ground ie restoring this car to its full factory fitted condition and colour. This happens to be Playboy pink, not my personal colour preference but this is the original colour and also an extremely rare colour, rumour has it that this car was only issued to the rich and famous. Possibly the legend himself known as Hugh Hefner.. anyway this car is the result of a lot of hard work and struggle which we have faced these past years and someday soon will be restored to its original glory and hopefully be the platform and step we need to have our own garage. If anyone has any info on this car it would be greatfully appreciated as even the hardcore enthusiasts dont seem to own one and only know of its rarety in this colour.. YES ITS RARE! lol click on the photobucket link and check out what we have done so far.. Much love Paddy and Dave x

Hi all,

I'm based just outside of downtown San Diego and I'm very new to the American classic muscle scene. Originally from the UK I have been in the US for 10 years and only now am I starting to get the classic muscle bug.

My girlfriend and I have agreed to start saving next year with the goal of buying a clean, solid 67/68 GT Fastback as our first ever classic car.

I'd really like to meet up with any San Diego based owners, see their cars and really start to get a deep understanding of the year and model that I am hoping to own one day. I want to know EVERYTHING right down to the gauge of the wires that connect to the fog lamp switch and run through the 3/4" grommets in the radiator. Yeah I'm a freak for the details.

So if there's any :smartass:old timers:smartass: out there that would like to teach a semi-old/young brit about all of the beautiful details of the classic pony Fastback hit me up, I'll bring the donuts and coffee if you bring the knowledge.

Looking forward to becoming an American muscle addict.

Just wanted to talk out the information that I have started to gather even though I am a long way from buying my first vintage pony.

I plan to spend about $15k-$25k on my first 67/68 fastback.

This being said, playing at that price range does give me options but with them come some interesting questions.

Do I want to be a purest?
and try and find the cleanest, most original car I can, even if it is a little rough with the attitude of lovingly trying to track down every piece I can over time to create something period perfect.

Pros -
Owning something very rare
Potential for investment growth
The start of my 'real' car collection

Cons -
Hard as hell to find
Potential large time & money investment
Car drives like a car built in 1967/68

or

Do I want to be a funday driver?

Pros -
Enjoy the power & performance of a modded car
Easier to find a well done pre-modded car
Design the car to be 'mine' with aftermarket/remanufactured parts
Vintage style with modern reliability
Don't worry about the mileage and drive it every Sunday for apple pie out in the mountains

Cons -
Pre-modded cars come with their own potential problems
Will never really be considered a real investment vehicle
Building my own modded car from scratch is outside of my current skill set
Modding is an addiction and I'm a perfectionist

Thankfully I don't have the money burning a hole in my pocket yet so I'll have plenty of time to chew this stuff over. As this will be my first vintage, I know I'm going to want to play with it as much as I can which definitely leans towards the modded funday driver. Maybe I need to wait until my second or third vintage before I start buying investment vehicles.

I'm wondering how many of you went through your own decision making processes before deciding on what kind of Pony to buy and what influenced your decision?

In my ongoing quest to educate myself on the 67/68 Pony I have been watching the eBay auctions, reading the specs on the car and referring back to articles on the web about the different modifications.

From what I have read so far I am under the impression that there is conjecture with regards to the practicality and longevity of 289/302 converted with 347 stroker kits, especially with regard to the piston rod being so close to the oil rings.

I've seen quite a few 347ci cars advertised for sale and I'm wondering if they are engine work or damage just waiting to happen especially as you have no idea of the quality of the components that have gone into the build.

When I do buy I intend to use the car maybe once a week for a drive into the mountains for lunch, however I do want the piece of mind that my beefy power plant will run healthy for many years to come with regular care.

Just wondering what other people's opinions and experiences are on this subject.

Is $3000 a good deal for a 1965 Mustang 289 V8 Coupe. I know there are a lot of variables involved, and I haven't seen the car yet. All I know is the interior needs to be re upholstered. Other then that I believe the body is straight. I know some work had been done though I'm unclear as to everything. I'm not sure if its running or not. The only thing I really remember is the wiring was redone and its the second owner with all the original paperwork. I'm looking at possibly 1. buying it and reselling it right away for a profit. 2. Buying it and parting it out for a profit. or 3. Buying it and fixing it up so I can sell it for a profit. But only if $3000 is a good deal for this car. I'm thinking this could be a situation to make some money so I can continue fixing up my fox. Is this the case? Thanks

Newbie, and looking forward to reading what does on here.

I have a question regarding door window glass for a 1966 Fastback. Has anyone heard if there has been a one piece section made for the doors that would eliminate the need for wing windows?

Thanks for any and all help.

Hello,:smartass:

Question for the experts?

Which should I install on my 1965 Mustang a Pilot bushing, or the newer Pilot Bearing.

The reason ask is there are a lot of folks on this site complaining about the Pilot Bearing.

To my mind this is the weak part of a manual transmission, this part is being turned by the input shaft all the time and you can't get at to lube.

The Pros and Cons for either are the bushing does not disintegrate, however wears quite a bit, but is always there. Case in point I have just removed one and its so badly worn that it you could move from side to side on the shaft. However, it was still there!

Where the needle bearing unless its kept lubricated will have a limited life, and when it goes you have lost everything.

The one I'm going to install on my 1965 Mustang, no other choice, doesn't appear to be hermetically sealed, its open for the ingress of disc dust? The manufactures love this, they get to install a new clutch assembly?

I currently drive a Mercedes diesel [daily driver] with 4 speed stick shift, I bought the car when it had 50K miles, I now have 275K miles with the original clutch assembly and it still going strong. How is that, when I read on this site all the problems people are having with their clutches?

Are the manufactures building in obsolescence to this so they can sell more stuff?

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated, or your actual experience with this.
I know this yellowish tint happens with this color but is rediculous how yellow it is. I never got to see it in the sunlight and im just about set on spraying the car tomorrow. Why does it seem like the internet photos and the other cars ive seen in this color are nothing like one i got? I wont be able to post pics yet, but i was hoping someone could reassure me that it wont be a big banana when its done. Maybe some have seen the same?

Hello all,

First post of many I hope.

I have come to that time in my life where I want to put something shiny and old in my garage no doubt to compensate for feeling dusty and old myself :winks

My girlfriend and I have agreed to start putting money away to save for our first ever vintage car and have agreed on a '67 Mustang fastback. We could be a few years away from purchasing our starter car but we want to learn as much as we can before dropping our hard earned on some old muscle.

I have rebuilt a car from the shell up once in my past (a Sierra Cosworth back in the early 90's) so I at least know which end of a wrench to use and I'm not scared of stripping something down to the core. However, I don't want to get buried in a 10 year project either so I think we may be better off saving longer to get more together for something that already has a good foundation of work done.

I'm thinking we need to plan for about $15k - $20k for a solid car that has all the right qualities to be a lifetime collectible that we can keep in the family and enjoy as well as think of as an investment. We have agreed that we would like to spend the time and money to eventually create a 500GT replica.

That's as much as I know at this point, like I said I am green to American Muscle but I know what I like and what I want.

What lies ahead?

I bow before your collective advice and pitfall guidance :worship

Joel

I just installed two new chrome valve covers that have the breather caps rather than tubes going to the carburetor like in my old valve covers.

The valve covers came with two rubber plugs and two caps. I cut the rubber plugs so that engine could breath and set them on the valve covers and placed the breather caps on top.

Long story short, I noticed smoke coming out the breather caps, in particular when I rev the engine. Is this normal? Any suggestions?
