Hello all,
And a BIG thankyou to you all for your advice and assistance to date!
Have gotten hold of a new Rad, Heater Core and Halogen Headlamps as a direct result of this forum, as well as finding out the correct oil for the C4 Auto!

Another quick question, want to perform a full fluid change this weekend, including the engine oil. My 66' had the 200 Straight Six, and the previous owner admits to putting in Fully Synthetic Oil, which i don't think the car likes, as at first starting it's a little 'tappety' and after even a sort drive, i swear i can hear the oil 'bubbling' NOT GOOD!

So, what should be in there? 15/30? I am at a bit of a loss, and can't seem to find a definitive answer online!

Look forward to all your advice,

Christopher

I know of only two independent sources for red line tires for an early Mustang: Coker and Diamond Back. Diamond Back (dbtires.com) offers only radials while Coker (coker.com) has both radial and bias ply versions. The prices for the two brands of radials aren't all that much different; either will set you back around $200 per delivered tire. Are there any others to choose from?

DB modifies existing radials by vulcanizing red, white, blue, gold (pick a color) walls onto the tires. Coker makes their own limited production tires using, what Diamond Back would claim are old worn out molds that major companies discarded years ago. The DB radials have better ratings and the the DB argument that using a modern tire made by a 'major manufacturer' who makes millions of them provides a better product seems to be reasonable.

The proof is in the product though. I plan to drive the car so I am considering only radials. What experience do any of you have with either or both of these radial red lines? 1) Do they look similar to an original? and 2) If you were going to drive the car which is the best choice?

My 1966 200 auto straight 6 has a recent rebuilt carb, new voltage regulator, points, condenser, and a new thermostat (160*) all because just recently, it stalls when I accelerate from a stop (it sometimes will quit and lose all electrical power for awhile.....ie: once it stalls, I'll turn the ignition and there will be absolutely no power, but I'll turn the key off, then back on, and the car will start).

This happens only when the car runs hot (for some reason, even with 2 new thermostats, the car runs hot in the upper range).

Anyone had this problem or know of a fix?

I have a stock 69 Inline-6 with only 85k miles on it.

Long story short, it runs great, looks great, but I want more out of it.

1st Opinion:
Keep the car classic, restore it and keep it stock.

2nd Opinion:
Pull the engine and get a 302 in there.

I don't want to have a show winner or even enter any judgings but I would like to put my '66 convertible, which I bought in 1982, back to almost factory condition. I hope to finish it in time to drive it to my 50th high school reunion in 2016. :bigthumbsup Since I bought a 16 year old car there is no guarantee that its top was original; I know that at least the plastic window had been replaced. However, the convertible top 'pads' I recently removed look to me like they might have been originals. The long strips from front to rear on each side were a straight, 7" wide, heavy (maybe 3/32" thick), black canvas webbing while the 2 rear quarter panel pieces were trapezoidal shaped (7" where they join the long ones and almost 12" at the belt line) and of a slightly different, mildly stretchy fabric. None of these had signs of any foam or padding. NPD sells a $111 (ouch!) set of 'original style concours correct black' pads that look like what I removed but since their picture is from 50 feet away its not easy to really tell. There seems to be a problem with the name 'pads' if an original set had no padding. :scratchchin

Today I talked with a local guy who says he has been installing tops on these cars for over 30 years (still a decade after 1966) and that early Mustangs like 64 1/2 to 66 did not use plain, heavy canvas but used a folded affair with 1/4" or so of foam inside to form a real pad on each side. He says they were also tapered from 7" at the front to over 9" wide at the rear. It seems to me that either this guy or NPD (see their catalog, p45) is pulling my leg. The Ford shop manual is not all that clear but its words and pictures seem to support what I found and also what NPD sells.

Will the expert(s) on early convertible tops please stand up and tell us what was REALLY used on the early cars. A secondary question would be how close to original will I get for my $111 to NPD? 'Generic' top pads from the same source are only $35 but I know even less about what they might be.

As y'all know, I pulled my heater box many a moon ago. I also had to unbolt the underdash A/C evap case and slide it to the side to get out the box.

I placed all the bits and pieces, including the direct heater box parts, into a box and stored it in the trunk.

I now have the heater box completely assembled but I still have these two pieces that are unaccounted for. I have not, as yet, attempted to reinstall the box and re-mount the A/C evap unit.

What could these pieces be for? Where might they go? They are 1" square and 5/16" thick. FWIIW, I think the A/C was factory installed.

Also, what kind of 'nuts' are used on the three heaterbox/defroster flap levers? Are they all the same? Are they the little 'hat' type push nut or are they flat square or flat round push nuts?

I am rebuilding a 67. The carburetor was rebuilt a few months ago. Over the last few month, I've replaced the water pump, fuel pump, fuel filter, hoses, spark plugs etc. But every time I try to start the car I have to use starter fluid to get it to start. Once it starts, it runs fine. When I try to start it after running it for a while it starts right up. But when I come back to it a week, or even a day later, same problem. It also seems to have a stuck float. I was told to tap the carb with a hammer to free it up - and that worked. But every day it's the same problem. I've disconnected the fuel line and gas is flowing through the fuel filter but it was rusty. I installed another fuel filter (so there are now two) - but still have the same problem. Meanwhile, I've killed my battery a few times trying to get it to turn over. Any suggestions?

I have a 64 1/2 mustang, build date of 19 June 64. I recently purchased a restored radiator from a mustang parts supplier that is supposed to be a May 64 Dearborn radiator, but I'm not sure it's an original.

Radiator details: Radiator 65 V8 Dearborn, auto trans, DEP C4ZE 8005 - M2, date 4ED (1964 May 4th week).

The radiator has the information above stamped along the side rail, but on the passenger side of the radiator versus the driver's side. I've only heard of the radiator identification information being stamped on the driver's side. The radiator also has rounded "tabs" at the top of the tank exactly like what you find for San Jose radiators when all Dearborn tanks I've seen are square on top. There is a rectangular metal tag (about 3/4-inchs wide, 1 1/2 inches long)soldered onto the top of the tank at the top edge of the tank on the passenger side, with C4ZE, but I know that these are reporduced and purchased through vendors like NPD, so I've discounted this tag although it's correct for Dearborn cars.

Radiators around my build date time frame were only the Dearborn radiator style as San Jose did not start up mustang production until late 64 (I think toward the end of July 64) and the Metuchen NJ plant never produced any 64 1/2 mustangs.

Any help with getting a proper ID of this radiator would be appreciated. I'll try and post pics of the radiator later tonight.

Thanks!
