Default 2000 GT Very bad MPG

I just bought a 2000 GT manual mustang thats getting poor mpg. I filled up at a lttle over 1/2 a tank and only got about 70 to 80 mpg and 55 were hwy miles. I really need help what should I do other than changing the filter and plugs?

You can not check gas milage that way. First off fill the tank up, record miles at time of fill up. Next time you fill it up, check how many miles you went and - by gallons used and let me know

Okay it's full now, i'll let you know what I come up with. The last time I filled it full I got roughly 120 miles or so but not positive. I drove about 20 miles or so on the city streets and burned a 1/4 tank.

ok heres my .02 i had a 1990 toyota 4runner as a first vehicle that had 192000 miles on it ya i said 192000. bought it for 200 bucks and i was fifteen so i was happy. anyways same thing was happening to me it had the 3.0 v6 in it and auto tranny. i used to burn through a quarter tank in about 50 miles and i has a twelve gallon tank. i replaced about every thing known to man on that thing. i dropped about 7 grand into it in two years and probably only drove it for two months. thats what i get for being cheap. anyways after getting so much stuff done to it i was actually on myspace talking with a toyota mechanic about what was going on. he told me to go get my heads compression checked. got it done and the fourth and 6th were comming in at only 20 percent. turns out that the gaskets had gone and had lost all compression so my v6 was running off of a 4 cyl. got the gaskets redone and heads resurfaced while i was in there. mpg went up to about 17 in city which was amazing for a 1990 toyota 4runner. just my .02 and my story get your compression checked inside your cylinders by brakemax or another reliable source. cost about 70 bucks for me but i found out what was going on. also check to see if you have bad vacuum leaks but that would give you high rpms so then maybe your injectors are bad. injectors spraying three times the unnecessary fuel equals bad mpg like i said my .02

I would deff take it to a dealership and have them look over everything something just isnt right about whats going on. In my honest opinion if the dealership cant figure it out put it on craigslist and put a for sale sign on it. Not worth the money to drop to figure out whats wrong with it

It could be a easy fix. Just research common causes and check the items (ie. don't just buy a new maf if it says maf is a possible cause. Clean it, and test the currents through it) Anyone should be able to troubleshoot the easy stuff. As I doubt the dealer is going to be of any use other than costing you money. After you check everything and the problem is still going on send madmaxx69 a message. I've seen some of his posts and he seems to know his way around a mustang.
