This thread was fun and, since I had a pretty good lunch today, I thought I'd dig it up...
I had leftovers, but they were dang good leftovers from the dinner I cooked on Sunday night. I had country ham, pinto beans, cabbage and homemade cornbread with redeye gravy (I wonder how many folks even know what redeye gravy is any more.) Some folks might cringe at the thought of all that salt, etc. but, hey, at least it was healthier than a Big Mac and fries and it tasted a d*mn sight better!
Tonight I am cooking cubed steak (one of my wife's favorites) with mashed potatoes, white gravy, green peas and homemade biscuits. I enjoy cooking more 'flashy' things, sometimes, but it seems that, every so often, I have to return to my roots - the kind of stuff I first learned to cook when I still had to stand in a chair to reach the stove. I hope to have leftovers for tomorrow!

I'm glad you revived it! Can I come live with you? I havn't had redeye gravy in forever!
I had a mesquite smoked turkey sandwich with swiss cheese, mayo, and honey dijon mustard, on honey wheat bread.

I am fortunate to have been exposed to the cooking traditions of generations of Southerners. Not many people get to learn to cook from both parents, two grandmothers (one of whom once had her own diner - she is the one I was around the most and I lived with her in college), a step-grandfather and a great-grandmother (who, over the years, worked in a couple of different diners - she also lived with my grandmother while I was there and is the one who taught me to make redeye gravy.)
