To fight global warming, a bill in Sacramento would enable Los Angeles County transit officials to increase taxes on motorists. It's a bad idea that may foreshadow even worse to come.
Billed as a "climate change mitigation and adaptation fee," the measure would cost motorists either an additional 3 percent motor fuel tax, or up to a $90 annual flat fee, based on vehicle emissions. The new charges would be on top of taxes already paid at the pump. Either option requires a majority approval by a vote of the people.
"At this point the people of the Los Angeles region have just had it when it comes to traffic and air quality," claimed Assemblyman Mike Feuer, a Los Angeles Democrat and author of Assembly Bill 2558.
They should really demand the start of a petition that states they have to prove it exists in order to tax it. I would take something like that to the supreme court if need be. What's next? a God tax?
Saw that on the news. Just another way for the goverment to take more of our hard earned dollars. I am just curious when it will all end. I just do not think that they do not get it. People are struggling right now and they want more and more.

No joke. I would also like to see how making someone pay 90 dollors a year is going to stop anything other then having 90 dollors in your pocket.
It is all about revenue, pure and simple. Cities/gov have spent and spent money they don't have and now they have to come up with the money to pay for their spending sprees. It is good PR, tax the bad guys, aka cigarette tax/lawsuits where states rely heavily on that money. Just think if there were no smokers, everyone drove cars that got 100 mpg with no pollution...There were no smog problems, gasoline didn't have to be "reformulated". Cities would go broke. They really don't want everything to be in harmony. They would no longer have "sin" tax money.

Keep in mind that while people like to blame things on "the government", "the government" is PEOPLE. There are real people who put forth these proposals and increase taxes. And WE put these people in those positions.
"The Government" is not some evil faceless entity that by design is our enemy. WE choose who makes up this entity and it can be for good or evil. And whenever the Government does something we don't like, just remember that we allowed it to be that way. We can refuse to elect/reelect politicians that do not do what we want or is in our best interest. And we can elect those who will.
Now this does not mean we will always agree with the decisions the Government makes, but there has to be some real logic and caring for the actual betterment of all. Sometimes there does need to be taxes on things, heck I think we all know this. But when stupid taxes like these come up, we need to not just think about how stupid the "Government" is, but how we can get those PEOPLE out of office.

Probably a tax on air. Here in the central plains, (Nebraska) it's been the coldest winter in about 30 years, (some snow forecast for tomorrow, it's spring)
Nebraska senators just overrode the governors veto of an increase in the gas tax, (already one of the highest gas tax states in America) their reason for raising the tax is, people aren't driving as much, therefore they're not getting enough tax dollars for roads. Even when we conserve, we still get stuck paying more.

Funny thing is, I remember Tripleblack predicting that very thing would begin happening - and for those very reasons - several months ago. Doesn't do much good to cut way back on driving to save money when, because of tax increases, you end up paying the same amount to do less driving, anyway.

Valid point. The problem, however, is that, much like the current presidential election, it seems like, more and more, the choices we have for a particular office are equally bad. Vote one loser out, big deal - the only choices to replace him/her are all losers, too. In a perfect world, we would have honest, regular people who really want to improve things running for office and having a good chance of winning. In the real world, however, it seems that, in order to get the backing necessary to have a serious bid at an office with the power to really change things, you already have to be so indoctrinated (corrupted) into the system that only the names change.
