In a perfect world, the role of the media could have been to cry, "Stop this nonsense! Let's do issues." But, nooooo. Trashing makes better fodder for TV than policy assessment and is easier for the "commentariat" to handle. Let's face it, "dishing" is far more fun than sober analysis.
Negative campaigning works on several levels, and until it doesn't, that's what voters will be fed.
In Sunday's Huffington Post , Kathy Hilton, mother of Paris (one of Obama's "celebrity" co-stars that McCain attack ad) and a contributor to the presumptive GOP nominee, voiced her disapproval of the negative campaign tactics now being embraced; it is an observation that applies to the nasty tilt of both campaigns.
"It is a complete waste of the country's time," she said, "…at the very moment when people are losing their homes and their jobs. And, it is a completely frivolous way to choose the next President of the United States."
Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness, his upper rooms by injustice, making his countrymen work for nothing...Does it make you a king to have more and more cedar?Did not your father have food and drink? He did what was right and just,so all went well with him. He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well...But your eyes and your heart are set only on dishonest gain,on shedding innocent blood and on oppression and extortion. Jer 22:13, 15-17
Obama's own sense of humor earlier when he made that joke about being as over-exposed as Paris Hilton opened him up to that comparison.
Shoot, there are a TON of things they can (and have - and will) say in response that are every bit as mean and yet funny.
KS, you are GREAT at the "mean yet funny" stuff, do I REALLY have to go back and locate how many Republican homosexual inuendos you have tacked on to your posts?
LOL, I like the funny political ads - from both sides.
Early on Barack was able to laugh at himself - his humor was present and effective, and he was not taking himself overly seriously. I think he would do well to unbend a bit (the NYT and other liberal media have been suggesting this) and put that early fresh humor back into his campaign.
Shoot, KS, your shot of "the hug" you are using as your current avatar would be a good start! How about a whole series, with Bush smooching Saud in there too?
I'll get you hired on with the Obama campaign yet.

My sentiments, exactly.

I notice that when the truth or a fact is presented it is called a "negative add".
Like it or not, they work and they are the adds that are remembered.

I have a message for Mrs. Hilton..... Worry more about your daughter and less about McCain's ads. Could McCain's folks used any of my children as a negative in their ads? NO. And not that my kids are perfect, they have made their share of mistakes and will continue to. But they pail in comparison to what Paris has done and continues to do. She has made a name for herself as being nothing more than a rich girl who does stupid and controversial things. So when she is held up for doing so, expect it and deal with it... or get her help and have her straighten out her life.
You can't have it both ways....

The shackles of opression and dependence are most easily slipped on with a smile and kind words of hope.
1) Obama's father gave him 3 Islamic names. I agree, this is a moot point.
2) Most liberal as in as extreme as neo-conservatives. Both are dangerous. In other words: communist.
3) If you watched part of the video, 100 times he voted "present" rather than "yes" or "no." That's pretty vague to me.
4) Obama must feel that America doesn't deserve to have it's flag on his lapel. That doesn't sound very patriotic or American.
5) Wright must be a very hate-filled individual. But denouncing someone on record does not mean they're not lying. People lie on the record all the time.
6) Socialized health care: Canadians hate it!
Gun control: sure is helping D.C.'s skyrocketing crime rate, isn't it?
Welfare: Stop giving those lazy bastards money that they never worked for, while I work my butt off trying to pay for them!
7) Even though I agree about the standards of the time, Obama calling his grandmother a "typical white person" is a double standard. White people would be punished for saying "typical black person."
6) Socialized health care, I agree with you 100%, I have a freind in Canada, he says its STUPID. He hates it. And I hate it from what I know too, but cannot have a full opinion unlike my friend due to I have never had socialed health care.
Gun Control: I own a lot of guns, and never plan on getting rid of them. Criminals are going to buy guns whether its controlled or not, people need to see the light for crying out loud.
Welfare, Dayum right! I work my butt off and don't want it going to lazy bastards that can't make there own life! Too bad for them as far as I'm concered, they have no excuses.
