We've all seen this (and some of us are probably guilty ourselves)...
Young, stupid, and bored.
Hey, let's go smash mailboxes - spray paint houses - or toss eggs at cars!
Fun!
But there is a downside.
Sometimes you will be unlucky. The person whose property you are abusing may take offense. He might also come out and kick your teenaged butt around the neighborhood - or call the cops and press charges.
And if you are REALLY unlucky...
You might pick the wrong target. And even though its evil and wrong to shoot at someone who has done only minor damage to you with some prank, its a universal truth that evil persons EXIST.
They have no suspects????What about a ballistics report??That is just terrible and senseless.Evil, stupid people do exist, and i hope this shooter gets what is coming to "it"....

I bet they do - it will be a major case for that town.
I hope it was done on a side street rather than an interstate or major turnpike. On a side street at 3am, the odds are that you are looking at a local - and local secrets often get out.
If the witness got the tag number, they could close the case.
If not, it might take a while, but there is hope that word will get out.
Doubtful that the shooter would retain the gun after the homicide, but it MIGHT happen (good chance they are none-too-bright).

Just wondering if anyone has further details. The article states:
Police said 16-year-old Garrett Burton was with at least one other teenage boy Saturday in the backyard of a home when someone shot him in the head just before 3 a.m. Police have no suspects.
The article just says he was in the backyard of 'a' home - not that he was in the backyard of his home or the other boy's home or any home where he had any reason to be at that time of the morning. It also says that he was with 'at least' one other teenage boy. This makes me wonder (which is why I ask if anyone has more details) if he was really shot simply for egging cars or if he was shot because he and 'at least' one other boy (who knows - could have been a whole gang of boys) were prowling around in other people's backyards at three in the morning.

Good points.
I always find it interesting though that in cases like this the focus almost always seems to be on the "over reaction" of the one protecting their property...... when the simple truth is that if people respected other people's property and didn't put themselves in that position it would not have happened at all. These folks who "over react" (and they DID over react) didn't just get up and decide to go shoot someone.
I wish society would just think about that for a few minutes......

The shackles of opression and dependence are most easily slipped on with a smile and kind words of hope.
Very unfortunate that kids need to exercise smarts that many of us didnt have in our young teenage years. Much different society today. These are the words from the mother, that many parents in these circumstances probably echo.
"If I could just reverse this, I would much rather go downtown and take my child out of jail," Patti Burton said.
If it was because of egging then I have to say its excessive, too ban they don’t have old timers loading shotgun with rock salt anymore that would be more appropriate.
Heavy when you say ballistic report, it will only tell what caliber and nothing else. As far as a ballistic fingerprint they are jokes. I can change a ballistic fingerprint in 5 seconds with a paperclip.
