President Obama on Thursday defended a decision to shelve plans for a missile defense system in Eastern Europe, saying the new strategy was devised in response to new intelligence that shows Iran's missile threat is not aimed at the United States.
The missile defense system, planned under the Bush administration, was to have been built in the Czech Republic and Poland. The proposed system was pitched as a way to fend off potential attacks from Iran but it became a major irritant in relations with Russia, with whom the Obama administration is now negotiating a new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty.
"We have updated our intelligence assessment of Iran's missile programs, which emphasizes the threat posed by Iran's short and medium-range missiles, which are capable of reaching Europe," Obama said in a brief announcement from the White House."
What a great leader we have! His biggest concern is keeping us all safe.

He's more for going oversea's and giving apologies to everyone. I guess he didn't like the Russians being pissy with Bush's idea. I wonder what's next, ending the military due to "no real US threats"

Bush was still fighting the cold war and therefore ignored warnings from the outgoing administration and his own defense department. The real threat is to the US and our allies is from terrorist attack not ICBMs.
By scrapping the missile shield, the President is simply prioritizing our country's defense.
I do think that Bush's aggressive response to terrorism helped dissuade our enemies from another attack on US soil. But before 9/11 he and his admin were dropping the ball.
Well, seems like it has been successful in other areas quite often actually.
Patriot systems are pretty good too, but those are also being prevented by this administration from new deployments.
Point is, a shield CANNOT work if it's not in place. Obamessiah is very wrong on this.

I'd really like to know more about this 'proposed system'. For it to be loaded onto ship, it's either really small meaning that it has limited capability or it's very large and requires the use of a flight deck such as a carrier or amphib assault ship. Either of those scenarios aren't desirable for something that really NEEDS to be a fixed asset such as a defense system.

LOL, before someone says that these systems were cut to save us money - or to shift that spending elsewhere - most of the cost:
1. Has already been spent. R&D is THE major expense with these programs.
2. Was coming from our allies, who were PAYING us to install the systems. The Poles and the Eastern Europeans knew that those systems were not there to protect America, but them.
The Russians whined about them because they could, of course, also be used to protect against their missiles... And they didn't like the idea that their old slave states in Eastern Europe might not like them all that much, anyway.
But the article has the right slant.
Obama got his basketball socks charmed off when he went to Moscow recently, and he made a promise that he would be giving them a gift like this really soon.
I posted that here in the Zone somewhere...
Anyway, this is his method of "negotiating" with our enemies.
First you apoligize for all the oxygen Americans waste breathing...
Next you give them exactly what they want gratis, for free...
THEN you start to negotiate.

Anyone remember the shoot down of the satillite last year from the deck of a rolling Aegis class destroyer? It worked.
Drewedlecam, the fact that there is a missile defense system means that the bad guys will have to take steps to counter them that means spending a large amount of money. Ask the Soviets what happened to them in the 1980's. A thing called SDI basicly broke them.
I find it ironic that any country would be a ally of us at this stage and with this administration. Obama and his comrades are backstabbers.

Exactly! Taking away or halting the production of defense systems is like keeping F-16's instead of upgrading to a higher technology. It does not make sense.
