This is completely ridiculous! To me, this is one of the main problems with our country right now.
This kid had to put his poor little nose against the wall as a punishment so the parents are mad at the school. I went to a private school, where the form of punishment was usually "the paddle". I would have loved to put my nose to the wall instead of getting a red bottom.
When I got punishments from my parents (or my private school) it was always "for my own good". Punishments aren't supposed to be for the "punisher's" personal pleasure, but it's to get it through the kids head that what they did was wrong. But this lady is mad because her poor little kid had to sit in time-out.
Kids are our future, and if there is a lack of reprocusions (<--spelling?) then their is no structure. So what should we expect of our future?

I agree. I mean im only 19 but I got my fair share of "This is going to hurt me more than its goin to hurt you"s Seriously. I got my punishments (most of the time spanked with whatever my mom was closest too) and I grew up just fine. Everyone keeps saying that this stuff is leading to teen depression and suicide. But i disagree. Whats really causing this is that mommy and daddy kept them shelter for too long, and when they finally went out into the real world, where they couldnt always have their way, they couldnt take it. Disipline is a key ingredient to todays youth. I say spank that @$$

I had rulers and yard sticks broken against me and other similar things when I was in school. Maybe the parent should have inquired about the school's disciplinary policies before enrolling the child?
We live in a different world than when I was a kid.

The world is probably full of those who were punished as a kid, causing them to give their own kids no rules/boundaries/limitations. I wish I only had to put my nose on the blackboard. Doing away with corporal punishment is only causing more attitudes that you can do anything you want and nothing is done about it. Wait till they get older, when the world doesn't let them do whatever they want, and then they have a grown up tantrum.
Most pathetic thing to see is a grown man or woman acting like a 4 year old who can't get their favorite toy.

When i was a kid in school, i remember the paddle and would have taken to a nose in the corner anytime.
But i don't want a teacher to paddle my kid unless they get my permission. I want to hear both sides of the story and then determine if it's the teacher or me that gets to punish them.
If they put him in time out or a nose in the wall, they don't need any permission for that though, and it's cool with me.
I think alot of parents need to atleast put some what of a grip on their kids so they don't grow up thinking the world owes them or they don't know how to act.
I don't whoop my boys but they do get punished. Like my dad did, he found things that i was interested into and punished me like that. I remember asking for a pop on the a$$ instead of that, but he knew better.

I wish all I got was a nose on the blackboard. When I was in school the teacher had a paddle that had holes to suck you booty in when you got spanked! A swat on the had from a ruler was also common back in the day. Now a day's yes everyone it so "sue" happy and afraid to repromand any students, hell the kids are whooping the teachers @$$ and the teachers are still getting in trouble over it.
I agree that is a serious problem with the world today. $h*t some parents are affraid to disipline there own because they may get into trouble, but looking for that opportunity to sue someone else if their child is touched.

now days the parents and teachers run the schools diciplinary actions not the school and 99% of the time the kids get off scott free and there is no lessoned learned and +1 to the comment about people not know the difference between dicipline and punishment

I was a substitute teacher after I graduated college. I decided I would work some in a public school to see if I wanted to get a teaching certification. When I wasn't working at a printing shop I would often get called into "teach". Because of my size and general demeanor towards misbehavior I was quickly put in charge of in school suspension. While this wasn't my idea of teaching I decided to make the most of it and try various techniques. Most of the kids were aware of their situation but some seemed to enjoy in school a bit too much. One particular female student insisted on being a problem. She cursed frequently. She attempted to engage other students in conversation, would manipulate her bathroom trips to extended vacations in which she came back with the smell of smoke, and even asked me to go on a date with her. I asked the principal if she could be suspended but he said I would just have to deal with it. After a few of these incidents I sent one of my more trusted inmates to the art teacher and had a "Dunce" cap made up. I had the problem student sit facing out into the school away from the other students. When it was time for classes to change she initially thought it was funny. As her peers walked by and laughed at her it became less funny. By the end of the class change she was sobbing. The assistant principal walked by and asked to speak with me. He asked if I had made her wear the cap and I told him yes. He said I needed to have her take it off because we could get sued for humiliating her. I asked him if that wasn't the point of in school suspension? I may not have handled this perfectly but even at 22y.o. I knew this child needed structure and DISCIPLINE. She hadn't gotten it at home. School wasn't gonna give it to her either except for the one day when her negative behavior was not giving her the attention she sought. Negative peer reaction with a bit of humiliation made being a trouble maker not so fun. I'm sure she is a pillar of the community today.

When you really think about it, it's not always 100% the kids fault. It's parents like the lady in the article that let their kids get away with just about anything less than murder.
Not to say that some parents don't try though.
I now have a 3 year old daughter, and I am a firm believer of the "red bottom". I don't know how I'd feel about someone else spanking my kids, but I think teachers should take some punishment into their own hands when necessary.
On the other hand though, at my private school, there was a teacher that had had enough. She ended up writing on a kids forehead with marker! That's when I would go punish that teacher myself. But that isn't the case in this situation...

That's when parents need to be involved in their kids school. I would want them disciplined, but not abused and we all can decipher the boundary there.
I was the kind that if my kids acted up, all the teacher had to do is tell me if it was something serious and I'd address it when they got home. He or she wouldn't be able to sit for rest of the night. The next day I'd escort them in and have them apologize to the teacher for being a pain in his/her neck.

I think the parents in this situation were over-reactive.
I always opted out of corporal punishment for my kids in school. If my kids F'd up then I wanted them sent to the office followed by a phone call to me. I dish out the dicipline after I get all sides of the story.
Schools should retain the right to expell, suspend, or hold them in detention when the rules are broken.
People can't distinguish between abuse and discipline. I got spanked all through my childhood and would consider myself well adjusted as a human. Standing with your nose to the wall is hardly going to make you a serial killer.
Or damage you for life - Exactly, well said!! What we (my brothers and I) got, we surely deserved it...

Along with my dads leather belt sometimes he would use a small 'switch' which was a small tree branch. A right of boyhood was to finally get to go out and pick my own switch to get spanked with. I had a big smile on my face when I picked it from the tree.
And to those that want to hear both sides of the story, IMHO, you are wrong. When at school the teachers are the authority. They have taken your roll on a temporary basis and should be supported in that roll even when you might think they are wrong. Your child needs to learn to respect you and the teacher even when from one point of view that they were wrong. You as a parent will be wrong from time to time. Unless punishment follows quickly it has no effect on behavior.
Oh, and if you do not think that your kids will lie about what happened to protect themselves, you are stupid.
If you disagree, home school that kid!
The most stern teachers of my childhood are the ones I remember and respected the most and remember their names to this day!
