If they come to your area and put local stores out of business, those stores either had insanely inflated prices or poor service/location/selection. Local stores can survive Walmart. They just have to up their game. Specialize, or lower their prices. Rely on customer loyalty. Walmart does what ALL stores try to do. They just do it BETTER! Remember Walmart started out as a single Mom and Pop place. Sam just knew what he was doing.
Also remember, as to quality of service, everything is regional. Jenn when I lived in Cali I thought they had rude employees EVERYWHERE. People who thought I should be grateful they even BOTHERED to take my money. At the Walmarts around here I can't remember EVER having a bad experience. In fact my youngest daughter has a favorite cashier that she knows by name, who always comes over and says Hi and TALKS to us. Walmart is one of the FEW stores where if I ask a guy in hardware where to find something in the toy aisle, he can and will actually TAKE ME TO IT. Or TAKE me to someone who DOES know.

Remember they also hire a LOT of retirees, students, single moms etc., who don't WANT to be full time. And they pay them better than minimum wage.(Again, may be regional)

I'm sure Walmart counsels its part time employees on how to "maximize their employment AND governmental entitlements"

I shop there several times a week. They DO carry some cheap and "inferior" products (some of their electronics), but if you're a smart shopper and look around online first Walmart actually has some of the BEST prices on higher end stuff too. Remember its BECAUSE of Walmart that you can buy $29 DVD players and $300 computers. And here's a little personal story. I bought a Sony (higher end) DVD player for $350. It lasted 10 yrs. ($35 a year) I bought one at Walmart (Goldstar) for $29. It has already lasted one year...
LONG LIVE THE EMPIRE!! (of Walmart)
