I have never noticed that certain person result to uncivilized tactics to make their point, even after such tactics are used agianst them. The problem is not so much the threads, but the way a few people think they have to react to them.
If you are referring to the person I am thinking you haven’t read the old threads before this person ascended to “godhood” turning debates personnel and insulting was the favorite tactic when it was discovered he was losing a debate. This person would basically start a flame war, the thread would be closed down and then the thread would just fall of the map) I haven’t seen him resort to this tactic since I started a thread on how he was implementing a new form of censorship (that thread got way out of hand because so many people he had insulted started really flaming him and it got real nasty.)

One thing I think should be mentioned is that Political threads are not just “topics”. They are even more so not just “topics” in the manner they are being done here on the forums.
Those who say “Just don’t post in them” or “Don’t ban them, because who knows what other topics will be banned”, need to realize that there are already topics that I am sure would not be allowed. What if someone came to the forums and started posting tons of “Convert to Christianity” threads, or any other religion?
And what if someone came to the forums and started to post sexually explicit stuff, but didn’t use “not technical” verbiage? Would that be allowed as well? Would we allow general discussions on how to perform oral sex? How about anything else along those lines?
How about if someone came in and started to talk about drugs? Or about bombs?
Why not? They ARE after all just “topics” right? And you don’t have to read the threads, right?
What about racist topics?
Heck, there are many types of threads and topics that are not acceptable on a good many forums, and political threads are one of those that cause far more problems than they are worth…. and as such are not allowed on a good many forums.
This is not a “freedom of speech” issue, nor one of simple “censorship”. It is one about keeping the forums clear of stuff that is obviously more harmful than it is good. Nor is it about those of us who think they should be either segregated or banned not being “tough enough” for the conversation, or “wimps”. I invite anyone to come visit me if they truly think that.
As for the poll being flawed…. Not at all. If you have 3 candidates and the two losing ones total more than the one who won, does that mean he didn’t win? Not at all. Such is the way of things. And I personally would stand by whatever result this poll came up with…. even if that meant that the Political Threads stay and even stay on the open forums.
But when the poll is placed, and it is stated that the results will dictate the action taken (or not taken), then it is every member’s responsibility to VOTE on it. I personally think the poll is about as evenly crafted as can be. It offers a possible middle ground, which a “ban or don’t ban” does not offer.
You are never going to please everyone…. And I actually will not be upset whatever way it ends up going. But I can guarantee that if NOTHING happens, things will not get better, they will only get worse as the election season progresses. But what do I know, right?
Sorry if this is rambling… it has been a VERY long day.

i say find a spot for all the political crap, every other thing else in here has a place/catagory. so it might as well have one too, this way those of you that wanna talk politics will have a place to do so. personally i get enough of it on tv, the newspapers and being in new york i got plenty more with the convention. i dont need to see more bush/kerry crap on my mustang site, but i think those that need it should have a place for it.

Shartley I am very surprised you cant see the flaw in the vote. You have two choices to keep the political threads which people will have to decide between the two pro-political threads in effect cutting the votes down the middle. Then there is just one choice to ban them. This is like having two democrats run for president against one republican. It is not the same as having an election with three candidates a democrat, a republican and a green party candidate. In this case there are three candidates that represent three different views.
The pole here has three choices for a keep don’t keep decision, but then again maybe it was set up that way to stack the odds against keeping them.

Fordgazm you are really missing it tonight, I never said there were never more than two people running for president hence the example of a democrat, a republican and a green party candidate.
But what has happened is you have three choices for a yes or no question.
Create a new forum for political posts only - this keeps political posts but separates them from other post in the community lounge which will attract the pro-political voters.
Ban all political posts from AFM - this totally does away with political post which will attract the anti-political voters.
Do nothing . leave the forums how they are . - this will keep the political post where they are in the community lounge and will attract the pro-political voters.

I see what you're saying... So for it to be fair, to ban or keep political threads it must win by at least a 50% vote. Because there are two choices to keep it and one to ban it.
