I am currently displaced by the storm and agree that it sucks.
Besides the obvious flooding and wind damage, I am most ticked about the looting and the lawlessness. One could almost understand trying to get a box of formula for your child or insulin for your diabetic granny, but c'mon. People walking down the street with a stolen gun, a armful of Tommy Jeans and a new Flat screen should be shot on site.
The governor of N.O. finally declared Marshal law at least a day after the surrouding parishes. The crazy part is that N.O. is the one that should have declared Marshal law in the first place - it just about needs that on a daily basis anyway. What you do not hear on the news is that there are bands of law abiding citizens with pickups and shotguns (no ballistics) helping out where needed.
I've got family in the medical industry having to deal with people trying to overun the hospital when they were the one's that volunteered to help. Kind of makes me want to stay where I am right now and not go back.
The storm sucks and makes you want to rebuild better. Some of the people make you want to turn your back and walk away.
No one's told them where to go, they have no water, food or clothing. And you're worried about tommie jeans?
Where are they going to wash the clothes they have on their backs?
If I were CEO of Wal Mart, I would have told to those people to take what they need, profits and insurance can be dealt with later.
How are you going to find out what's going on without radios. or televisions that operate on battery power. There's nobody with bullhorns telling people what to do! Like any of it will be any good after the flood waters + toxic waste+battery acid formula that's running through the city right now.
In anarchy, people with guns inevitably take over. THat's why gov't should never let things descend into anarchy.
They knew the storm was coming, it should have taken a week to get administration going.

Horrible, just wondering why they build on land that is up to 20 feet below sea level, this will also cause the tree huggers to blame man for living on this planet again.
because it's the best port location for the mississippi river.

Why have I heard not a single report yet about a looter being shot? I've heard of cops being shot, law-abiding citizens being shot, helicopters being shot AT...but not a single story about a hardcore gangsta gettin' cooled.
Could it be that the National Guardsmen (and by connection, Dubya himself) are afraid of The Rodney King Effect?

The disintegration of the Liberal Dogma continues, right before our eyes. It is perversely fascinating.
I sent some dough to the Red Cross today. Let's represent for AFM and hold off on our latest mods a little longer than we want. Get these agencies some working capital!
Dude, that is so disgusting, I can't even type straight.

If you click on the yahoo links from "Fordgazm" on page 1 of this thread, you will see that yahoo has deleted one of the pictures at the request of th AFP! What a bunch of racist id-gits.
Here is an interesting link to a story of the others affected by Katrina's destruction. Read the daily blog. Careful, if you are animal lover, it's grips your heart.
The black guy " Looted " some bread . The white people " found some bread " . Anyone else think yahoo is racist ?
No, I KNOW Yahoo isn't racist. First off, the photographers captioned the pictures, not Yahoo. Second, the photographer of the "white" couple (I think they're actually Hispanic), said the food and pop were floating outside the store and they simply gathered some up. The photographer of the black man said he went INTO a store and TOOK the items... LOOTED.
The link below has interviews with the photographers.
Finally, I'll be honest, given what's going on down there, I'd have a hard time accusing ANYONE of "looting" as long as what they're taking is essential to their survival and NOT a 57" Plasma TV!

[quote=kscoyote]I think Bush should not have cut the funding to reinforce the levees. The tax-cut and subsequent invasion has left us vulnerable, has overextended the National Guard, heck, even the Coast Guard is in Iraq now.
We don't have boats, apparently, we don't have police, and it's taken us a WEEK to get those folks food and water.
We had supplies to Iraqis before the bombing even BEGAN, same for Afghanistan.
Bush says "No one could have guessed the levees could have broken," when he cut the funding in 2002. Mary Landrieu screamed on the Senate floor trying to finish the project, but the Tax Cut which should have gone to PROTECT New Orleans was more important.
He's lying his behind off!!! His approach is faith-based. Scientists have called for upgrading the levees since the early 90s. Clinton approved the project, and it was almost done before the project was un funded in 2002.
Shameful.
Irresponsible.
That's why we PAY taxes in the 1st place. Now he's pulling in his POPS and CLINTON to beg for money, because the Gov't doesn't have any.
And his 9-11-style of hiding from the problem shows a total lack of leadership. Here's you PRESIDENT PLAYING GOLF while thousands of people are suffering , corpses lie in the streets, and a city is destroyued from his own irresponsibility.
What do I think of this? I think he should resign.
And we haven't even gotten to Mississippi and Alabama.

The crazy thing is that about 2/3 of Louisiana Nat'l Guard troops and equipment is in Iraq, so New Orleans was obviously not a concern to the Feds. It was only a matter of time before something like this was to happen, so the gov't should have implemented steps a long time ago to prevent this amount of chaos. I mean, 80% of New Orleans is still under water. The President said he didnt think the levees would succumb to this and then took 3 days before he responded. That is BS! Now whether it is because New Orleans is a city with a 30-40% poverty rate and mostly minority, it is not acceptable for response to have been this slow. Right now there are approximately 240,000 people in Texas with about 25,000 in the Astrodome and many more in surrounding shelters. The best way to help is contact Red Cross or some charity and donate old clothes you don't wear anymore. I already did, considering I only live 20 minutes from the Dome, but any little bit counts.

You must think all of the looters are minorities. You must watch too much Fox News. They only show you what they want you to see. Everyone is looting and stealing, even the cops, which by the way 2/3 of them quit. By the way this isn't about "hardcore gangtas gettin' cooled".

Screw the animals, there are still people out there.
What bothers me is how people blame the hurricane on Global Warming, and this whole levee debate, when the sections that failed were already upgraded and considered in Good condition (for a category 3 hurricane). Upgrading those levees to Cat. 5 strength would take 20-25 years according to Army Corp of Engineers. The upgrade plan started 30 years ago and was 80 percent complete, but the plan only called for category 3 hurricane strength. SO I guess you blame Nixon for not foreseeing this Cat. 4 hurricane coming 30+ years ago.
But Im ashamed that it took that long to save those people, most people I know say this is the worst thing theyve ever witnessed, and are ashamed that it happened in the US.
[quote=TheStangRookie]Screw the animals, there are still people out there.
How nice of you! These animals that were left behind by their owners for whatever reason will also die out there alone. They are house pets, therefor they depend on humans to survive. I am not trying to take the focus off of the hundreds of people suffering in N.O., but the media won't win any awards by reporting on animals that have been left behind, so I felt it was right to raise awareness of the other problems.
If you bothered to check out the link to the website, you would have seen that the animal rescue team from New York also brought food and water supplies for the people that worked in the shelters that were destroyed by Katrina. These workers used their own money, and most importantly, donated funds to purchase these supplies for the shelter workers.

You lib's can't even wait for the rotting bodies to be picked up before you start this blame game $hit. VERY DISTASTEFUL!!!
Don't f'ing be asking WHY right now, be asking WHAT!!! As in WHAT can I do RIGHT NOW to help these people.
There will be plenty of time later on to argue the WHY.
If you are displaced by the storm and looking for a place to relocate, there are 300-400 jobs available here in Evansville, IN. These are immeadiate start jobs starting around $8.00 hr (unskilled) with tons of overtime. You can work 7 days a week 10 hours a day if you wish. These jobs will run at least 6 months, and can lead to prem. if wanted. The place makes M.R.E.'s so you would also be helping feed storm displaced Americans. Custom staffing of Evansville is placing these jobs at AmeriQual.
Also any displaced mechanics can also find work around here through a network of local auto shops helping displaced mechanics. Some of these include a place to live while getting re-established.
These are all I know of right now, but will keep eyes open for more.

There is NOTHING anyone can do, until there is a way of getting supplies to them. Don't you know what a STATE OF EMERGENCY is?!!
No one was allowed to go into the area WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION from the PRESIDENT, who was PLAYING GOLF!!!
The Coast Guard had ships in the area, but COULD NOT GO IN.
People tried to get in with their own private boats AND COULD NOT GO IN.
The GOVERNOR and hte MAYOR asked for assistance BEFORE the hurricane even HIT. The ARMY CORPS of ENGINEERS said those levees and flood walls WOULD NOT HOLD. and asked for assistance in getting the people out.
There are all kinds of tapes and transcripts of the meetings that occurred.
THIS IS NO GAME.
There are 10,000 people dead because the president was ON VACATION, and ran away from the problem AGAIN.
Those in charge seem to think the gov't is for giving money to wealthy individuals and corporations. I see Halliburton got the contracts for cleanup, already. The bodies aren't even buried yet, and Cheney's company is making money in ANOTHER NO BID CONTRACT.
It's not even incompetence, it's Disaster Capitalism, where losses are counted in bodies, and profits in money.
Sick.
