THose people lost everything. Most don't have insurance. There is no food water, electricity outside of car batteries, or toilets.
The cops who "looted" took groceries and medications. While they were there, it was orderly.
I don't blame them a bit.
The reason for the levee break, was looting by the administration.
Insurance will reimburse those stores and corporations in N.O. those peoples jobs, property and livelihoods are gone. They're not getting anything back.
Not "everyone" looted big screen televisions, but people died in the stadium because they had no access to medications.
with 10,000 dead, who the heck cares about televisions? Those people are dead from incompetence. No one's looking out for them, so they'd better look out for themselves.

There SHOULD have been plans to DELIVER MEDICINES, FOOD, WATER, and SANITATION in the aftermath, and it SHOULD have happenned IMMEDIATELY after the FLOOD, KNOWING it WAS GOING TO HAPPEN.

The head of the Army Corps of Engineers stated that the levees did NOT BREAK. The levee OVERFLOWED WITH STORM-SURGE at those points, which then eroded.
THE LEVEES WERE ONLY DESIGNED TO WITHSTAND A CAT 3 STORM!!!!!!!!!!

There is NOTHING anyone can do, until there is a way of getting supplies to them. Don't you know what a STATE OF EMERGENCY is?!!
No one was allowed to go into the area WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION from the PRESIDENT, who was PLAYING GOLF!!!
The Coast Guard had ships in the area, but COULD NOT GO IN.
People tried to get in with their own private boats AND COULD NOT GO IN.
The GOVERNOR and hte MAYOR asked for assistance BEFORE the hurricane even HIT. The ARMY CORPS of ENGINEERS said those levees and flood walls WOULD NOT HOLD. and asked for assistance in getting the people out.
There are all kinds of tapes and transcripts of the meetings that occurred.
THIS IS NO GAME.
There are 10,000 people dead because the president was ON VACATION, and ran away from the problem AGAIN.
Those in charge seem to think the gov't is for giving money to wealthy individuals and corporations. I see Halliburton got the contracts for cleanup, already. The bodies aren't even buried yet, and Cheney's company is making money in ANOTHER NO BID CONTRACT.
It's not even incompetence, it's Disaster Capitalism, where losses are counted in bodies, and profits in money.

When I have time I’ll go back a read this all but just thought I would throw in that I visited New Orleans on a training conference 4-5 years ago if you want to know why all the cops are quitting, the pay for officers down there is 12-16,000 a year. Not to mention that New Orleans has one of the worst crime rates in the country. I would quit too.
