Default Flag burning ammendment killed in Senate

As some of you may have heard, there was an ammendment to the Constitution that was killed in the Senate recently. I do not know every particular about the proposed amendment. It did pass in the House of Representatives though, and was killed in the Senate by 1 vote.

I don't want this turning into a huge debate over what everyone thinks and this or that, but here are the facts about how YOUR Senators voted.

How many flags have been burned in the past year? Is there an epidemic I hadn't heard about?

****************************

Like burning a village to save it, I guess you have to take away freedoms to preserve it . . .

Take away what freedom? The freedom to desecrate the most widely known symbol of America? I know I know....freedom of speech right? Well how can you scream freedom of speech and first ammendment rights and then turn around and burn the flag that defends them. There must be a line drawn somewhere and I say desecrating the flag is a good place to draw it.

The flag's survived almost 250 years without protection -BECAUSE it stands for freedom.

The people who burned the flag, (there have been only a handful of cases in the past 20 years) realized the stupidity of it, because their ability to burn it proved them wrong.

The flag is only a symbol. What's it a symbol of? The US. What is the real meaning of the United States of America? Is it the flag? -Or the fundamental freedoms guaranteed us by the CONSITUTION.

You can't desecrate the Constitution to protect the flag because some people find it offensive.

What's next? No cartoons of Muhammad? No depictions of Christ? People find that offensive. People's freedom do not extend to being free from being offended.

****************************

Here's Bush desecrating a flag by writing on it. Should we throw him in jail for that? or what he's done to the CONSTITUTION.

http://dc.indymedia.org/newswire/display/78229

S Code, Title 4, Chapter 1, Sec. 8 (g): "The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature."

That just goes to show how little people understand about treating the flag with respect and what constitutes desecrating it. In the military the flag is raised at 0800 sharp 7 days a week. It's taken down at sunset and folded immediately and turned over to the Petty Officer of the Watch (In the Navy anyway). If the flag is so much as not folded with no wrinkles, the sailor who folded it is immediately remediated, to put it nicely, and made to refold it again and again until he can get it right. My point is this. Is it too much to ask that every single American treats the flag with the respect that it deserves as a universal symbol of America and all the men and women that have died protecting and providing our freedoms? I think not, and I honestly think it's Congress' job to make sure that small request is kept, by law if needed.

AMEN!!

How can people stand up and say it's my "right" to do as I please. Then turn around and burn the very symbol that gave them that "right"

It angers me when I see people destroying something that they should be taking pride in.
If they think it's so unfair and wrong to stand up for thier country, I say leave the USA and try and find a country that will allow you to speak your mind freely!

The American flag is a symbol of freedom. A freedom that millions of men have died to give people. I personally think burning the flag is an insult to anyone and everyone who has died to defend it. I know that it falls under the First Amendmant, but without their sacrafice, we wouldn't have a First Amendment. We probably wouldn't have any amendmants. We would probably still be under British rule. Burning of the American flag should be against the law until the end of time.

Yeah, that's why in the 70s when it was fashionable to burn the flag, my granddad -a WWII veteran who fought in France and Germany -told me, "I fought so those folks could show themselves to be the idiots they are, I didn't fight for the flag, I fought for freedom. Those folks are proving they have every freedom in the world when they can do that -Let 'em burn the flag, by them doing it -it disproves everything they're saying."

My granddad kept a copy of the Contstitution in his wallet, like most WWII vets, at least in Kansas. He gave me one when I was 6. I grew up around him, because both my parents worked until I was 12 -So I can get pretty cantankerous and blunt.

******************************

Everything that's going on in this country and in the world, and the Senate is arguing over something that happened 25 years ago.

It's a waste of time.

Again, how many flags have been burned in the past year? The year before that? How about the past 10 years?

3, 5, & 50

How many kids don't have insurance? What's our energy policy? How many folks died in Iraq last month?

This discussion is not about our energy policy nor is it about health insurance or how many people we lost in Iraq last month. This discussion is about whether desecrating the flag should be unconstitutional.

It's an oxymoron.

The US Constitution has never before been used to take away the people's rights. It has been an instrument of freedom.

There are more pressing matters in front of the senate thanan election year stunt. Just like every other wedge issue designed to get people fighting mad, they know it wouldn't pass -it's designed to get you fighting with me.

It's a straw man setup, just like abortion (gee, I wonder whatever happened to THAT issue, since R's got the House, Senate, Courts, AND the White House -I reckon they don't want to talk about that anymore -put it on the back burner, in case the Dems take one of the Congressional houses) they're just using you.

Plain and Simple, so they'v egot to go back 30 years to find another wedge issue, so we'll fight for the next 5 months.

I'm game, but it's a waste of time.

I've never burned a flag, and don't ever paln to, but I'll fight to let people make idiots of themselves.

I'll fight so people can wear what they want to wear, say what they want to say, and do what they want to do without Gov't intrusion, so long as they don't hurt anybody else.

That's the American Way.

everyone's free to make a**es of themselves -I'm free to do so, but none of us is free from being offended by a**es.

We are free to tell them what a**es they are, -and offend them. That's America.

So you honestly believe that the Freedom of Speech covers any and everything that can be spoken or written and there's absolutely no limit on it whatsoever. Your Utopian world is a nice thought, but in the real world, it just doesn't work. Do you also believe that the freedom of speech covers people who chant that god hates america and homosexuals and that the USA is damned at the funerals of men and women who died serving their country?

It does, and in Kansas, they've tried to limit him any way they can, and it keeps getting struck down.

Phelps is an attorney, and knows his limits well, unfortunately.

Phelps, the KKK, the Communists, the NRA, the Christian Coalition, everybody can say whatever the heck they want, -but so can I.
