Senate report: No Saddam, al-Qaida link
Long-awaited analysis also finds that anti-Saddam group misled U.S.
IMAGE: SENATE COMMITTEE LEADERS
The Senate Intelligence Committee, which released the Iraq report, is chaired by Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., left. The ranking minority member is Sen. Jay Rockefeller, right.

WASHINGTON - There’s no evidence Saddam Hussein had ties with al-Qaida, according to a Senate report issued Friday on prewar intelligence that Democrats say undercuts President Bush’s justification for invading Iraq.

Bush administration officials have insisted on a link between the Iraqi regime and terror leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Intelligence agencies, however, concluded there was none.

Republicans countered that there was little new in the report and Democrats were trying to score election-year points with it.
Story continues below ↓ advertisement

The declassified document released Friday by the intelligence committee also explores the role that inaccurate information supplied by the anti-Saddam exile group the Iraqi National Congress had in the march to war.

It concludes that postwar findings do not support a 2002 intelligence community report that Iraq was reconstituting its nuclear program, possessed biological weapons or ever developed mobile facilities for producing biological warfare agents.

The 400-page report comes at a time when Bush is emphasizing the need to prevail in Iraq to win the war on terrorism while Democrats are seeking to make that policy an issue in the midterm elections.

It discloses for the first time an October 2005 CIA assessment that prior to the war Saddam’s government “did not have a relationship, harbor, or turn a blind eye toward Zarqawi and his associates.”

Bush and other administration officials have said that the presence of Zarqawi in Iraq before the war was evidence of a connection between Saddam’s government and al-Qaida. Zarqawi was killed by a U.S. airstrike in June this year.____________________________

What short memories the conservatives have. I reckon with heads already filled with propaganda, there isn't room for much else.
I read part of your 9/11 report and noticed the little blurb about Clinton and Monica, if Clinton wouldn't have got involved with that mess, maybe he could have concentrated on Osama.
And don't tell me that his personal life is none of our business, he was in the white house, he was distracted, it is OUR business.
He and he alone got himself impeached.

You are so disillusioned it is hilarious,

facts and evidence from sources sat on the commission, the same source that previously was directly responsible for the policies and procedures that set up the intelligence failure?

Default Path to 911- propaganda

I don't doubt there is enough blame to go around. But let's look at who is behind this pseudo-docu-drama. Now it has become known that the Republican chairman of the 911 commission who has endorsed this show on the Sunday Talking Heads programs accepted money from ABC for his endorsement. That money is going to his son's political campaign. Next one of Rush Limbaughs writers was involved in the screenplay. Nuff said there. Then who decided to show this just before the 2006 elections? Also who is the sponsor of this show? You don't take an emotional situation like this & try to alter the facts. The producers had to change things because many of the incidents and situations early in the program just DID NOT HAPPEN! There is no doubt we we asleep at the switch. But for one time in the last 8 years could this administration admit they made a mistake. Take some responsibility for something. Just once.
Stop always trying to blame it on someone else. In retrospect I am sure the Clinton administration had opportunities to correct this problem. But it is time for the american people to hold this administration accountable for something. Just once. One time.
It wasn't Clinton who disbanded the special operations team searching for Bin Laden in 2002. Stop this iraqi nonsense and let them control their own country. Bring our guys home NOW!
Oops let's talk about mustangs etc & don't want to get off on a rant here. Looks like I did though. Sorry about that.

Ahh, come on now, you saying good ol' boy Lee Hamilton, who served 17 terms as a democrat Representative and chaired the Select Committee on Intelligence, Select Committee to Investigate Covert Arms Transactions with Iran, and the Committee on Foreign Affairs, would want to direct any attention away from the status quo he chaired the creation of? Are you suggesting he would harbor any ill will towards G.H.W. Bush or his son?

Actually I was speaking of someone who would have been on the witness list had would of testified (and most likely grilled!) if she had not been on the oversight committee!

Default The Political Dimension

[quote=kscoyote]And the CONSERVATIVES yelled

"no war for Monica. " [quote]

True. The "wag the dog" accusation was floated (again - Clinton DID use the military an awful lot, though never on a large scale). In this case, just the normal political posturing (currently going on for the millionth time in Washington as we speak, check Cspan, a symbolic vote with 100% of the Republicans in favor, and 100% of the Democrats against).

As for blaming Clinton for WTC attack #1, after a month in office, its about as fair as blaming Bush for WTC attack #2, after 6 months in office. Its also awkward for the leader of the most powerful nation on the planet to resort to blaming his inexperience and lack of preparation for a nasty disaster.

Both arguments are moot, anyway.

The world doesn't take a "time out" whenever we change leadership. When that new quarterback steps on the field, he'd better be ready, and his team with him. The opposition will have no mercy.

With JFK it was the Bay of Pigs, setup and all-but-launched under the Eisenhouer Administration, then bungled by the new guys Kennedy installed. One of his advisers actually told him that the friendly units put ashore in Cuba didn't need air support or armor to fight Castro's new T38 Soviet tank regiment.

Sadly, Kennedy listened to this nonsense, and the rest was a disaster.

Giving the Kennedy Administration its due, I don't recall that they used their inexperience in governing as a defense against criticism.

The commission was headed by a Republican.

The SENATE committee is MAJORITY REPUBLICAN, and Headed by a Kansas Republican.

Picking a straw man from a minority commission member is a poor argument.

All the Senate headline did was make it possible for those Senators to go back home on the campaign trail and divert criticism regarding the WMD topic. It wasn't just a rehash of already known facts, it was a rehash of a rehash.

Virtually everything coming out of Washington for the past 3 months (and the next 3 months) will be calculated to get people re-elected and to protect the status quo.

I can write the headlines now:

"House Committee discovers there were no direct links between Sadaam and Usama bin Laden."

"Senator Knot A. Klue announces that he supports the latest weapons and defensive technology for our troops."

"Governor R. E. Action, assured re-election in the fall, announces that his policy to address Iran's nuclear program is far better than that of the Republicans, whose failed policies are endangering the American People. (The Governor is expected to announce soon that he is running for his party's Presidential nomination)."

"Congressman Don Key of Connecticutt answered criticism that he had voted several times in favor of the war in Iraq with the revelation that: "I was lied to. Sure, I read the same documents, sat in the same CIA oversight briefings, but still, I was LIED to! They told me that Sadaam had WMD's - I'm sure thats what they told me!"

Or endless versions of the same drivel.

If one of these morons had to give a straight answer on a substantive ISSUE instead of issuing position statements that avoid all the tough issues, their heads would explode.

Duct tape time.

Al Quaeda is making more videos than Brittney Spears. Iraq had NOTHING to do with 9-11.

BUSH has said so repeatedly in the past week, probably because he knew the report was coming out. He went so far as to claim he NEVER made a connection between the two.

And you're apparently buying it.

Those responsible are in AFGHANISTAN.

Pakistan just made a truce with them. You may have read it in the papers.
