Since you don't agree with the rest, we will take your title away....
In the face of evidence agreed upon by hundreds of climate scientists, George Taylor holds firm. He does not believe human activities are the main cause of global climate change.
Taylor also holds a unique title: State Climatologist.
Hundreds of scientists last Friday issued the strongest warning yet on global warming saying humans are "very likely" the cause.
“Most of the climate changes we have seen up until now have been a result of natural variations,” Taylor asserts.
Taylor has held the title of "state climatologist" since 1991 when the legislature created a state climate office at OSU The university created the job title, not the state.
His opinions conflict not only with many other scientists, but with the state of Oregon's policies.
So the governor wants to take that title from Taylor and make it a position that he would appoint.
In an exclusive interview with KGW-TV, Governor Ted Kulongoski confirmed he wants to take that title from Taylor. The governor said Taylor's contradictions interfere with the state's stated goals to reduce greenhouse gases, the accepted cause of global warming in the eyes of a vast majority of scientists.
“He is Oregon State University's climatologist. He is not the state of Oregon's climatologist,” Kulongoski said.
Taylor declined to comment on the proposal other than to say he was a "bit shocked" by the news. He recently engaged in a debate at O.M.S.I. and repeated his doubts about accepted science.
In an interview he told KGW, "There are a lot of people saying the bulk of the warming of the last 50 years is due to human activities and I don't believe that's true." He believes natural cycles explain most of the changes the earth has seen.
A bill will be introduced in Salem soon on the matter.
Sen. Brad Avakian, (D) Washington County, is sponsoring the bill. He said global warming is so important to state policy it's important to have a climatologist as a consultant to the governor. He denied this is targeted personally at Taylor. "Absolutely not," Avakian said, "I've never met Mr. Taylor and if he's got opinions I hope he comes to the hearing and testifies."
Kulongoski said the state needs a consistent message on reducing greenhouse gases to combat climate change.
The ice-age was ended by dinosaurs farting!
I don't believe anyone knows for sure. Heck, it wasn't that long ago that we didn't even have thermometers.
It's just one more issue to politicize...

about 600 years ago, scientists believed the world was flat and that the Earth was the center of the universe too. it only takes one person to prove the vast majority wrong. it doesn't matter how many people believe a theory. it is still just a theory.

The recent discovery that warming cycles in the planet's weather are created by human beings is shedding new light on earlier misconceptions about the history of the planet:
1. Since these cycles can be documented over a period of almost 1 Billion years, the human race has now been proven to be far older than the 1 - 2 million years once thought to be scientific fact. One amateur climatoligist in Oregon purports to have found proof supporting this theory, with the discovery of fossilized Ford Expedition parts found in the same strata as a Tyrannasaurus Rex. This has also brought to the fore an entire new area of study as to the potential role mankind played in the mass extermination of the dinosaurs...
2. The periodic episodes of Ice Ages and massive glaciation, heretofore thought a byproduct of the sun's natural cycle, have now been tied to the use of freon in our ancient ancestor's vehicles and homes. During economic depressions, the high price of energy forced the pre-historic suburbanites to turn down their thermostats, or even junk their airconditioners altogether, triggering the release of ozone-eating contaminants, which then caused the ozone layer to vanish and kill off most of the planet's life-forms, whose deaths in turn triggered abrupt cold weather. However, a competing theory regarding "nuclear winters" caused by our distant cave-ancestors launching pre-emptive strikes against one another's caves is fast gaining followers...
3. A well-equipped Antarctic expedition with funding from major corporations backing the expenditure of massive government funds on alternative fuels is trekking toward the South Pole, where they plan to drill exploratory holes in the ice cap seeking evidence of the greenhouse gases emitted by early man nearly a billion years ago when Antarctica was located on Earth's equator and was covered in jungles. The companies funding this exploration of our species' assault on earth's fragile ecosystem are receiving widespread applause except from the tiny minority of non-believers. These lost souls are wasting their breath with their laughable accusations that these well-managed companies are clearing huge mountains of taxpayer cash from government subsidies to address the global warming crisis.
4. More recent historical periods, such as the years between the 10th and 13th centuries when temperatures were more than 3 degrees celsius higher than today, are also being re-examined. Long sited as evidence that it is the sun's natural cycle rather than the intervention of Man that drives warming and cooling periods, these years are now being closely studied by the finest scientific minds. 10th century technology was obviously much futher advanced than earlier believed, and the massive cover up that for so long has clouded the public's eyes is being rapidly revealed!
The mass jailing of the recalcitrant school teachers, professors and rogue scientists who persist in denying their role in the massive history fraud case is almost complete. Re-education camps located near population centers are beginning to show results, with thousands of the criminal educators now recanting their earlier denials and signing loyalty pledges to the new World Eco-Government. Plans to institutionalize the obviously disturbed remaining hard core un-believers are almost complete, though there is hope that the experimentation with a combination of lobotomies and shock therapy with re-education will solve much of the problem...

We in the science fiction field have a long history of turning conspiracy theories into plot lines.
You should see what I do with the "logic" behind not drilling for oil in the most barren landscapes on earth (ie, Prudhoe Bay, etc.)!
There's more, lots more - imagine what happens when simply draining the Western democracies of all their wealth by shutting down their economies triggers a global depression - and DOES NOTHING to change the warming trend?
The coverup will be amazing.

Australia is going to outlaw standard light bulbs in favor of flourescent units, primariliy to help fulfill the Kyoto stickup, er, "Accords".
The idea is that using flourescents will save electrivity, and hence save the planet.
There might be some logic here, but lets see if its "eco" logical...
Flourescent tubes all contain mercury, cadmium, antimony, and its in a nasty powder form that is hard to control. Most of the planet not mesmerized by the sneakiest anti-capitalist attack since Stalin started bulldozing Ukranians into landfills is already treating flourescent tubes as "hazardous waste" ( Factsheet: Disposal of Spent Flourescent Light Tubes & Mercury Vapor Lamps ). Hmmm. I wonder what the plan is to handle all those additional metric tons of heavy metals entering the ecosystem every day?
Then there's the concept of "cost". The initial cost of replacing hundreds of millions of cheap incandescent bulbs with far more expensive flourescent bulbs will hit the pocketbook pretty hard. Many fixtures simply won't ACCOMODATE the new bulbs (which simply aren't available in the small sizes and contorted shapes that lots of lamps use). I suppose they will just have to be ripped out and replaced. Hmmm. I bet THAT costs a pretty penny!
Then there's the idea that flourescents will save lots of energy by being more efficient. Given that the fixtures to use them cost more - and to be really efficient require such things as ballasts (oh, did I happen to mention the long list of nasty heavy metals and toxins in ballasts?), so the fixtures are bulkier and heavier. In situations where the lights are turned on and left on, the flourescents will indeed consume less electricity than a comparable incandescent. However, in situations where the lights are turned on and left on for only a brief period, the incandescent bulbs are more efficient!
Then there's the problem with the use of flourescent lights in work spaces where their flickering pattern can cause health problems with certain people, especially folks who must use computers all day. Ah, but who cares about THAT - when we're saving the planet?
Sheesh.
They need to change that global warming treaty from "Kyoto" (named after a perfectly nice city in Japan) to something more appropriate - like "Bad Science Designed to Bilk the Western Democracies of Their Life Styles and Wealth".

This push to conserve energy, might just be a concession to the folks who generat power, enabling them to stave off increasing their capacity. They're gonna have to increase it eventually. Or perhaps the govarmints are in the pockets of sylvania...

They want to do the same in california, I hope that madness does not speread, flourescent is hideous. http://money.cnn.com/2007/01/31/news...ion=2007013108
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -- A California lawmaker wants to make his state the first to ban incandescent lightbulbs as part of California's groundbreaking initiatives to reduce energy use and greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.
The "How Many Legislators Does it Take to Change a Lightbulb Act" would ban incandescent lightbulbs by 2012 in favor of energy-saving compact fluorescent lightbulbs
"Incandescent lightbulbs were first developed almost 125 years ago, and since that time they have undergone no major modifications," California Assemblyman Lloyd Levine said Tuesday.
"Meanwhile, they remain incredibly inefficient, converting only about 5 percent of the energy they receive into light." Levine is expected to introduce the legislation this week, his office said.
If passed, it would be another pioneering environmental effort in California, the most populous U.S. state. It became the first state to mandate cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, targeting a 25 percent reduction in emissions by 2020.

If anyone tells you their electric car doesn't pollute the environment, ask them about:
1. That huge battery pack which contains enough heavymetals and exotic harzardous waste to wipe out a small city's water supply - AND must be replaced every 5 years with an equally nasty battery pack because the original one wore out!
2. How are they going to recycle all those batteries, given that we have problems handling the comparitively small and innocuous lead-acid variety?
3. Where do they think the electricity to charge up their electric car COMES FROM - the tooth fairy? 70% of our electicity supply comes from burning fossil fuels - and the efficiency of these power plants at removing pollutants are FAR inferior to the efficiency of a modern automobile! With the huge majority of new power plants in this country being fueled by good old nasty coal, and any potential plan to convert the fleet to electricity will require a TON more nasty coal fired power plants, how efficient is THAT?
4. In the event of an accident, a lead acid battery will ocassionally spill a few pints of acid into the environment. In the event of an accident with an electric car, the potential environmental pollution is far greater!
5. Money has a value. There are indeed worthy causes out there geared toward preserving our environments. If the money blown on the electric or hybrid car (which often costs twice as much as a high efficiency conventional vehicle that gets essentially the same mileage) were invested in those worthy causes, wouldn't THAT make a bigger difference in the health of the planet?
Huh?
