They held an Islamic Law trial in Saudi Arabia after they caught 7 men who abducted a woman and repeatedly raped her.
The 7 were found guilty of the crime, and will start serving their sentences of 10 to 60 months (yes, MONTHS).
Meanwhile, the rape victim will receive 200 lashes (usually administered in public) for having the bad taste to be snatched and raped.
Should she survive the punishment (such lashings often result in death or permanent disability in and of themselves), she will be ostracized for the rest of her life.
I guess she's lucky she was only raped by 7 men. Her punishment for more would have probably been a head chopping.
Yup, heard this on the radio the other day. Makes ya think doesn't it.
Where exactly did she go wrong? Was she runnign down the street in some cheerleader niform or something? NO... have to love the wonderful laws of the Islamic world.

I did hear she's got a 6 months in prison sentence too for letting the media get wind of the rape... Hah... it's even in the piece behind the link:
Quote:
Last week the Supreme Judicial Council increased the sentence to 200 lashes and six months in prison and ordered the rapists to serve between two and nine years in jail.
IMO, the woman's verdict is a prime example of a verdict that belongs in mideval times, but shouldn't be around anymore in the 21st century.

Looks like part of her "crime" was being alone with an unrelated man.
Ruling according to Saudi Arabia's strict reading of Islamic law, a court had originally sentenced the woman to 90 lashes and the rapists to jail terms of between 10 months and five years. It blamed the woman for being alone with an unrelated man.
I think the rapists should at least have had their wiener schnitzel's removed in public.

Yet more examples of why I feel we need to distance ourselves from SA. What we get out of the "relationship" IMHO is not worth supporting their way of life and what I consider crimes against woman and humanity. While NO country is perfect (not even us), this type of thing is so far in the wrong that it should not be excused.

The court was mad when the ruling leaked to the press and it embarrassed them. So they upped the punishment, from 90 to 200 lashes.
I read on Al Jazeera (which CNN wannabe was supportive of the Saudi Court's findings - "Cultural Rights") that the woman would have to serve her 6 months BEFORE the lashing. The Judge was concerned that she might die from the lashing, thus avoiding her prison sentence!

I think the judge should be gang raped and given 200 lashes ! I wonder how different things would be then .

The judge is a Male, and immune from such problems under Islaamic Law.
All Muslim judges in these Sharia countries are males.
Women are property.
Its as though a cow had wondered out of its pasture, and is now being publicly punished for the offense to encourage the other cows to behave.
By the last accounting, over 450 American citizens (women and children) are being held against their wills under these conditions in Saudi Arabia. If you think this is just a problem for "foreigners", keep this in mind: We have people over there in bondage too.

Unfortunately, we don't do that.

Treason.

And you know why that is right? Because we have to "embrace" all cultures....
State Department spokesman Sean McCormack avoided directly criticizing the Saudi judiciary over the case, but said the verdict "causes a fair degree of surprise and astonishment."
wow, what a harsh statement.

For our State Department, that statement IS "harsh".
Was he holding a flute of champaigne, his pinky daintily tilted skyward, as he delivered the "stern rebuke type ME/B-11" to those naughty Saudis?
Goodness, he might almost have, well, frowned when he said it. Tsk, tsk. WHAT is the new generation of diplomats COMING to?
He was practically unhinged! Next thing you know, he'll come out with a "we are studying the problem type ME/N-19", after which, ANYTHING might happen!
