The moment he lays a hand on you (e.g. grabbing your shirt) he is attacking you and you are legally allowed to defend yourself (by decking him or doing whatever you feel is necessary). You can defend that in court, and you can defend that to the naval academy. But I guess it's all said and done now. Having to fix his fart cart might be a better punishment anyways.
