Default Monte Carlo SS surprise

I met up with an Monte Carlo SS tonight at a red light. Don't know exactly what year it was, but probably like an '02 or so.
Anyway, he pulls up and revs the engine I look over and he has what looks to be his wife in the car. Light turns green, we both sit at the green, I was waiting for him to make the move, then he revs and takes off spinning the tires, I just floor it without getting the revs up and take off a hair of second after he does.
However, he actually stays ahead and I don't pull on him until I'm going about 70, as soon as my nose pulls ahead of his I let off the gas, give him a thumbs up and continue on my way.
He actually surprised me, I thought these cars were slower than that. Perhaps it was because I was a sec too late, or he had some goodies under the hood.
All in all, I beat him by just a 1/4 length. Are those SS really that fast stock, or was it because I took off the line a little too late without bringing the RPM's up first.

depends if it was actually an 02 or the newer ones with the 5.3 v8.older ones were both n/a and s/c,but of course you know how easy s/c are to mod....and the newer ones(i think 05 an up not sure, but front end is redesigned) have 303 hp with auto and fwd.

I did some quick research on the Monte Carlo's and the one I raced looked like the '05 and up design, which I guess would explain why it was as quick as it was.

I sure hope it was the v8 or SC one haha. A guy i know has an 02 monte carlo SS N/A and its slow as heck. I beat him in my basicly stock auto v6. The new ones are nothing to take lightly i hear. However, we weigh less and have rwd.
