I had to take the boss's kid over to the auction to pick up a car, and we took my Mustang. One of the used car guys had a RX-8 over there and asked me if I wanted to run. I said sure why not. The auction has a test track, so we lined them up and as all the salesmen watched, I got my @ss handed to me. The salesman said the car had a dragstrip tag reading 10.11 from Martin speedway. We opened the hood and could see a turbo and intercooler, but the salesman said it was a daily driver. It was a repo, and the salesman had little info.
There are alot of sleepers out there. I ran across a 1000hp supra at the local body shop getting a touchup. Saw the car at the redlight the next day. Trying to get me to race him. I played it off like I wasn't interested but I knew that I was already beaten.
the RX-8 has that Rotary engine right? i didn't know they made a big aftermarket for those engines yet since the tech is still so new. Guess i learned something today. I need a blower

Not new technology, has been around for 20+ years.

Shoot better go farther then 20 years the first rotary put out by mazda came out in the mid 60's and there is a HUGE following for wankle engines (I'm one of them). If the person before hand happened to switch to a 1.3-rew motor then it had twin sequential turbos and a base hp of 250 or so, and that is without any kind of turbo upgrade or street port. The rotory engine has the most UMPH for it's displacement and it one of the only exceptions to the old saying "theres no replacment for displacement".

There's a fairly sizeable aftermarket for the RX-8
I'll tell the OP this though...............BEWARE the 3 rotor............
There are a few turbo systems for RX-8s and they can make pretty decent power until you blow up an apex seal.....
Sounds like this guy either has a 3 rotor, or a "built" 2 rotor (IDK how the hell you can build those, never seen one done) There are 3 rotor TT RX-7s that will take your face and beat it to a pulp with the sheer power it makes.

yea my dad and i get really into the rotary motor swaps in the old school toyota starlets and stuff...they never cease to amaze me. its a sexy thing to see one of those things lobe as if it were a big boy motor. if you look at the racing beat site you can find all kinds of stuff. vashthe3rd you're totally right, they never stop making power but once you blow the apex seal you might as well say goodbye to that build.

One of the guys that autocrosses locally has an RX-7 that he put a 6L Corvette engine into. That thing hauls!

Yep there's a few locals here, LS1, LS2 swaps.
On top of that, the 3 rotor, although expensive is what the wankel design should've been from the start. Powerful, yet durable. Unlike it's 2 rotor brother the 3B doesn't need a rebuild stupid often. You can make some really ballsy power with them.

Had to have had a 3 rotor swap, there hasn't been a way to really modify the new gen 13b rotary's in the rx8's since they redisigned it(they moved the exhaust port from the rotor housing to the side housing) another possibility is that they swapped over an older 13b. Love those motors but they don't last for crap once you start beating on them.

This is true unles you start by replacing the apex seal's then they will out last all the components atatched to it. i have a 1986 RX-7 with a 13b that has been slightly built and i have slung the guts out of my altornator 4 times racing it. the external componenst start to come apart at 9k rpm's and a well built motor is good for 14krpm's. if you ar runing a stock motor to hard by 40k miles you are going to start having problems starting it due to low compresion.
Yes but honestly, the apex seals are fragile pieces and they're quite expensive. It's gets old taking a motor out and replacing apex seals. We used to run Atkins seals which are pretty good seals and while we never actually broke them we did bend them enough to where it affected compression and the car wouldn't start unless we poured some oil down the holley carb and make a huge smoke show. They're fun as hell when they run, on our particular combo we had a huge street port and I used to launch that thing off the rev limiter on the MSD's at 11,500 RPM's, but on average that particular motor(12a, 1.1 liter for those that don't know) would last about 12 passes and we'd have problems.
